1993 Mercury Cougar Body & structure Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the body or structure system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Body & structure reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

THE POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCH HAS BECOME VERY TEMPERAMENTAL (ESPECIALLY AT HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (ABOVE 90 DEGREES)), IT ACTS LIKE THERE IS A CIRCUIT BREAKER OPENING AND CLOSING, BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT WORKS, SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. WHEN IT DOESN'T, BECAUSE THE ACTUAL LOCKS ARE CYLINDRICAL, THEY CAN NOT BE OPENED BY FINGERS, SO ONE HAS TO OPEN THE WINDOW, AND USE THE CAR KEYS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR, TO UNLOCK THE DOOR. *AK

THE PASSENGER DOOR HINGE FAILED, NOT ALLOWING THE DOOR TO OPEN OR CLOSE PROPERLY. DEALER SENT US TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP (AT OUR OWN EXPENSE) AND THEY TOOK 5 DAYS TO PERFORM THIS SIMPLE REPAIR! THE DRIVER'S DOOR HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM A COUPLE YEARS AGO. THE DOORS ARE VERY HEAVY AND LONG AND JUST SEEMS TO BE BADLY DESIGNED. THE PASSIVE SEAT BELT JAMMED IN THE FRAME OF THE DOOR THAT WAS FIXED. DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS RELATED SOMEHOW TO THE DOOR HINGE, BUT HAPPENED ABOUT THE SAME TIME. SHOP WAS TOLD TO FIX DOOR, AND THEY DID, BUT THE SEAT BELT DID NOT RECOVER. HAVE NOT DECIDED WHETHER OR NOT TO FIX IT YET. IT IS JAMMED AT THE BACK, SO WE CAN STILL SLIP THE HARNESS OVER OUR SHOULDERS, SO WE ARE RESTRAINED PROPERLY, BUT IT NO LONGER MOVES BACK AND FORTH ALONG THE DOOR FRAME. *AK

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
