Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
An SUV crashed into an apple store in Hingham Mass. The driver told police his foot became stuck to the gas pedal. More likely his foot became hooked under the brake pedal as he tried to quickly shift his foot from the gas pedal up and to the left onto the brake pedal. This has happened to me several times after accelerating and then having to make a 'panic' stop. I had to quickly wiggle-foot from under to the top of the brake pedal. Brake pedals should be changed from a T shaped to a 7 shaped configuration. This would eliminate the hook. T configuration-the 'stem' is attached under the center of the brake pedal 7 configuration-the 'stem' is attached under the right edge of the brake pedal

ON OCTOBER 21, 2016, WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON I-30 IN DALLAS COUNTY, A FIRE OCCURRED IN THE DAIMAY-SUPPLIED DRIVER-SIDE VISOR LAMP ASSEMBLY OF MY 2009 FORD MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE FORD FUSE SYSTEM FAILED, ALLOWING THE FIRE TO BURN, MELTING PORTIONS OF THE VISOR AND ROOF MATERIAL. THE MELTED MATERIAL FELL ON MY LEFT LEG AND THE DRIVER SEAT AND FLOOR OF THE VEHICLE, CAUSING 2ND AND 3RD DEGREE BURNS TO MY LEG. CHRYSLER NOTIFIED NHTSA OF A SIMILAR DEFECT IN THE DAIMAY ASSEMBLY ON JULY 1, 2014, WHICH RESULTED IN THE FIRST OF TWO CHRYSLER RECALLS ON JULY 10, 2014. FORD, HOWEVER, CHOSE TO NOT RECALL ITS VEHICLES WITH THE DAIMAY VISOR ASSEMBLY SYSTEM, DESPITE RECEIVING NOTICE OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, CLAIMS AND INCIDENTS BEFORE THE SUBJECT INCIDENT. THEREFORE, I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT THIS DEFECT BE PROMPTLY INVESTIGATED AND THAT THE UNSAFE SYSTEM BE RECALLED SO THAT OTHER CONSUMERS ARE NOT INJURED.
INTERIOR LIGHTING CABLE BURNED OUT. LOST FLOOR LIGHTS, DOOR LIGHTS AND MAP LIGHTS

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
I NOTICED SOMETHING HANGING DOWN FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE AND ON INSPECTION DETERMINED IT TO BE A FUEL TANK SUPPORT STRAP. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC FOR FURTHER INSPECTION AND WHEN HE PUT THE VEHICLE ON A LIFT ONE OF THE TWO SUPPORT STRAPS HAD CORRODED COMPLETELY IN TWO AND THE OTHER STRAP WAS LY CORRODED NEARLY AS BAD. IF THE SECOND STRAP HAD ALSO BROKEN AND ALLOWED THE FUEL TANK TO DROP AND DRAG ON THE PAVEMENT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SEVERE FIRE. I HAD MY MECHANIC REPLACE BOTH STRAPS IMMEDIATELY TODAY 11-2-16.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, GASOLINE FUEL FUMES EMITTED INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND THE FUEL WOULD DISSIPATE TO HALF OF A TANK WITHIN TWENTY MINUTES OF DRIVING. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL LINE, THE FUEL PUMP, AND THE FUEL SEAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000.

From owner reports, verbatim
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AROUND 25 MPH AND LESS THAN ONE MILE FROM OUR HOUSE. WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN THE ENGINE REVVED UP. I WAS RIDING WITH HER AND OBSERVED THE ENGINE REV TO AROUND 2,500 RPM BEFORE SLOWING DOWN. I ALSO OBSERVED THAT HER RIGHT FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AND THAT NOTHING WAS TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR. THE CRUISE CONTROL HAD NOT BEEN TURNED ON. THIS WAS AT LEAST THE FOURTH TIME THIS YEAR THAT THE ENGINE REVVED UP WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM AND THE ENGINE DID NOT REV WHILE THE DEALER WAS TESTING THE CAR. *TR
I APPLIED THE BRAKES AT AROUND 20 MILES PER HOUR ON JANUARY 25 AND THE MOTOR ACCELERATED FOR ONE OR TWO SECONDS. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BY PRESSING THE BRAKES MUCH HARDER THAN NORMAL. ON JANUARY 26 I APPLIED THE BRAKES AT AROUND 60 MILES PER HOUR AND THE MOTOR AGAIN ACCELERATED FOR ONE OR TWO SECONDS. I CONTINUED TO PRESS THE BRAKES, THE MOTOR SLOWED DOWN AND THE CAR EVENTUALLY SLOWED. IT SOUNDED LIKE PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR DOWN HARD TO PASS ANOTHER CAR ON A TWO LANE ROAD. *TR

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I WAS DRIVING AT 45 MPH AND APPLIED THE BRAKE TO STOP. THE ENGINE REVVED TO 2,000 RPM. I WAS ABLE TO STOP WITH VERY HARD BRAKING USING BOTH FEET. THE ENGINE CONTINUE REVVING AT 2,000 RPM EVEN AFTER THE CAR HAD STOPPED. I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE REVVED EVEN FASTER. THE ENGINE DID NOT SLOW DOWN UNTIL I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. AFTER LEAVING THE ENGINE OFF FOR AROUND TWO MINUTES, I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND IT RESUMED RUNNING AT AROUND 500 RPM. MY 23 YEAR OLD SON WAS SEATED NEXT TO ME AND VERIFIED THAT NOTHING WAS TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR WHILE THE ENGINE WAS REVVING AT 2,000 RPM AND THAT BOTH OF MY FEET WERE ON THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE HAS REVVED WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKE AT LEAST SEVEN OTHER TIMES; HOWEVER, THE REVVING STOPPED AFTER ONE OR TWO SECONDS. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO A FORD DEALER THREE TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM; HOWEVER, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *TR

THE TIRES ON MY 2009, MERCURY MARQUIS, ARE DRY ROTTED. I HAVE ALSO NOTED THAT THERE ARE HOLES IN THE SIDEWALLS ON ALL OF THEM ALONG WITH A LARGE BULGE IN THE RIGHT PASSENGER, SIDE TIRE WALL WITH A TEAR AND LARGE HOLE WHERE THE BULGE IS. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO LOOK UP ON THE WEB SITE TO SEE IF MY TIRES ARE IN THE RECALL LISTS WITH SOME DIFFICULTY. I SINCERLY HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM AS I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE NOW AND MY HUSBAND HAS SEVERE PARKINSONS DESEASE AND I AM AFRAID SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIM. THANK YOU! I WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR RESPONSE.

THE LEFT TURN SIGNALS (FRONT, REAR & DASH) BLINK FASTER THAN THE RIGHT ONES INDICATING A BURNT OUT BULB EVEN THOUGH THE LEFT BULBS WORK. WE REPLACED THE FRONT & REAR BULBS TWICE AND THEY WORKED NORMAL FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THEN THEY REVERT TO BLINKING FAST. I REPLACED THE BULBS THE FIRST TIME AND THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER REPLACED THE BULBS THE SECOND TIME. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. I'VE NOTICED THIS WITH OTHER GRAND MARQUIS ALSO. *TR
