What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Mercury Milan, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Mercury Milan. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, there was an extensive amount of time between depressing the brake pedal and when the vehicle would come to a stop. Occasionally, the contact had to pump the brake pedal to assist while stopping the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic,) and the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the HCU had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, Ray Skillman Ford (1250 US 31 S, Greenwood, IN 46143), who confirmed the diagnosis. The vehicle was not repaired because the vehicle was no longer covered under the recall. The manufacturer was informed of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 166,230.
The contact owns a 2006 Mercury Milan. The contact stated while his 16-year-old daughter was driving in traffic and was making a complete stop while she was depressing on the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop. The contact stated that his daughter desperately depressed on the brake pedal and felt the brake pedal travel the floorboard but failed to respond causing her to strike the hitch of the vehicle in front of her causing front damage to the vehicle. No major injuries were reported and no police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the contact explained to the dealer that the vehicle experienced the same failure as recall NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic), the dealer stated that the VIN was not included in the recall and that there was no failure with the brakes. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure was approximate 150.000.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ARE BREAKING. RESULTING IN THE INABILITY TO LOCK THOSE DOORS. *TR
I AM UNABLE TO OPEN DRIVER SIDE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE OF CAR. THE HANDLE REMAINS IN THE UNLOCKED POSITION AND CAN ONLY BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. THE CAR CAN'T BE LOCKED WITH THE REMOTE, ONLY WITH THE KEY. IN THE EVENT THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY, THE DRIVER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR UNLESS THEY COULD OPEN THE WINDOW AND THEN OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE. THIS PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE PREVALENT WITH THE 2006 MODELS BOTH FORD AND MERCURY. JUST SEARCH THE INTERNET. IT APPEARS THE RESOLVE IS TO HAVE THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE REPLACED. THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS ON OTHER FORD MODELS FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS BUT NOT THE FUSION OR MILAN, WHICH HAVE THE MOST COMPLAINTS SEEN ON THE INTERNET. THE DEALER WILL FIX THE PROBLEM FOR A FEE BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS NOT DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. MY VEHICLE HAS ONLY 44,344 MILES, IS WELL CARED FOR AND IT IS EVIDENT THAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH MUCH LESS MILEAGE. I AM SURPRISED THAT THIS ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. I HAVE CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY HAVE INFORMED ME THAT IF CUSTOMERS DO NOT REPORT THE PROBLEMS DIRECTLY THEN THERE IS NO ACTION TO TAKE CARE OF SUCH SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PROBLEMS, SO I AM REPORTING MY PROBLEM. I HOPE TO SEE THIS BECOME A RECALL ISSUE AS THE DEALER I SPOKE WITH INFORMED ME THAT THESE HANDLES BREAK VERY EASY AND WITH NO WARNING LEAVING A PASSENGER OR DRIVER STUCK INSIDE THE CAR AND THIS COULD BE A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH IN AN EMERGENCY OR ACCIDENT. *TR
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
I WAS DRIVING DOWN I75S IN VERY SLOW TRAFFIC. AS I WAS APPROACHING AM ACCIDENT. I NOTICED THE CAR STALLING OR JERKING A LITTLE. THE WRENCH SENSOR CAME ON IN THE CAR. I GOT OVER 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER & CHECKED THE CAR. I DIDN'T SEE ANY OBVIOUS PROBLEMS SO I TURNED IT OFF WAITED A FEW SECONDS & STARTED IT BACK UP. THE WRENCH LIGHT WENT OFF BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I GOT OFF THE EXIT & TURNED AROUND TO COME HOME. THE CAR DID FINE. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST & THEY SAID THE THROTTLE BODY WAS FAILING & WOULD EVENTUALLY LEAVE ME STRANDED. I AM TRYING TO GET THIS ISSUE TAKEN CAR OF SOON. I'VE SEEN SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUES AS MINE ONLINE WITH NC CARS & WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY RECALL INFO REGARDING THIS SUBJECT. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO WORK BC THIS IS MY ONLY CAR & IM SCARED TO GET STRANDED. *TR
VEHICLE IS A 2006 MERCURY MILAN V-6 PREMIER PURCHASED IN SEPTEMBER 2009 WITH LESS THAN 25,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. ACCORDING TO CAR FAX SHEET, NO ACCIDENTS, NO PROBLEMS WITH CAR. DROVE OFF LOT ELECTRONIC READER INDICATED 23 MPG AND 27 MPG AVERAGE. ONE MONTH AGO MPG WENT DOWN TO 16.5 AND MPG AV 18.5!!! THEN WENT BACK UP A BIT TO 18.5 MPG AND NOW IT IS AGAIN 16.5 MPG. I AM FURIOUS AND WILL BRING BACK TO COLONIAL NISSAN IN FEASTERVILLE WHERE I BOUGHT MY CAR. HUGE MPG DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE US EPA MPG AND THE CURRENT HORRIBLE MPG WORSE THAN MY 1993 NISSAN MAXIMA WHICH IS 20 MPG! IS IT THE ETHANOL IN THE GAS? IS IT A PROBLEM WITH THE GAS/AIR RATIO? ALSO, NOTICED PEDAL ACCELERATION ISSUE. LATELY NOT SMOOTH ACCELERATION... CAN PUSH PEDAL AND NO CHANGE IN ACCELERATION FOR TOO LONG A TIME. WHAT IS GOING ON???? PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS FRAUD. THANK YOU. IF IT IS SIMPLY AN ADJUSTMENT TO THE SOFTWARE THEN I'M OKAY WITH THAT BUT IT THE MPG IS THIS BAD I'M TRADING IT IN... *TR

MY POWER STEERING FAILED AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. I HEARD A FAINT NOISE LIKE A MARBLE DROPPING ONTO A SURFACE AND ROLLING AS I STARTED THE CAR. I QUICKLY REALIZED I WAS NOT ABLE TO STEER THE CAR. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE BOLT ON THE IDLER PULLEY BROKE, AND PART OF THIS BOLT FELL INTO THE ENGINE. WHEN I ASKED HIM HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN, HE INFORMED ME THAT HE BELIEVED IT WAS DUE TO THE FAULTY DESIGN - PLACING TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON THIS BOLT, CAUSING IT TO EVENTUALLY BREAK IN TWO. THEY HAD TO TAKE THE ALTERNATOR OFF TO RECOVER THE PIECE OF THE BOLT THAT FELL INTO THE ENGINE. THE IDLER PULLEY WAS THEN REPLACED. I BELIEVE THAT IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING, ESPECIALLY AT A HIGH SPEED, IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS IF NOT FATAL ACCIDENT. *TR

PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENSES THAT DETERIORATE/CLOUD AND REDUCE LIGHT PASSING THROUGH THE LENS. RESULTING IN REDUCED VISIBILITY DURING NIGHT TIME DRIVING. WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 75 MPH WITH CRUISE CONTROL SET. THE WRENCH LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON , CRUISE CONTROL TURNED OFF AND LOST POWER AND SPEED. I HAD TO PULL OFF INTO THE DITCH TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT AND DRIVE DOWN THE SHOULDER TO A REST STOP. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND LET IT SIT FOR FOR 5 MINUTES AND THE TURNED IT BACK ON AND IT RAN FINE. AFTER READING OTHER ISSUES LIKE MINE I'M THINKING IT MAY BE THE THROTTLE BODY OR TRACTION CONTROL SENSORS.
