2006 Mercury Montego Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Mercury Montego, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The throttle control transmission has failed me several times when I’m on the road. Thankfully it’s only left me stranded on the side of the freeway once but has made me stop during oncoming traffic several times. The wrench light comes on when the vehicle decelerates and I’m unable to accelerate. Once the steering wheel even locked. This happens at random times but because the code is pending mechanics can’t seem to find the issue. This has happened dozens of time where it just stops suddenly while driving. I am concerned for the safety of me and my family when driving this vehicle. Please get this issue resolved!

The throttle body on the 2006 Mercury Montego SHOULD HAVE been recalled just like the 2007 Mercury Montego that I owned previously was recalled. It has the SAME EXACT problem! The throttle is VERY DANGEROUS as it dumps fuel without me touching the gas pedal. I have already almost killed a pedestrian! Please help! I cannot afford to fix the car and I don't want to hurt anyone. Thank You , [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

WHILE TRAVELING HOME FROM CHURCH, MY CAR SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN WITH NO WARNING. I WAS IN TRAFFIC AND ABLE TO PULL OFF WITH NO POWER AT ALL. WHEN I STOPPED AND PUT IT IN PARK, THE CAR WOULD NOT ALLOW YOU TO TAKE IT OUT. IT WOULD NOT CRANK EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE BATTERY. I FOUND OUT THE NEXT DAY THAT I HAD A BLOWN PASSENGER SIDE TAIL LIGHT. THIS CAUSED MY CAR TO CUT OFF AND FORD STATED THAT THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS WIRING ISSUE. APPARENTLY, THE TAIL LIGHTS ARE CONNECTED TO THE MAIN SYSTEM AND IF ONE GOES OUT IT SHUTS THE CAR OFF AND ACTIVATES THE THEFT PROTECTION SYSTEM. THIS NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE EXPRESS WAY, THE ISSUE COULD HAVE BECOME SERIOUS. IT WAS STILL A SERIOUS ISSUE. THANK YOU. *TR

2 YEARS AGO I PURCHASED 4 MICHELIN LATITUDE TIRES (65,000 MILE TIRES) FOR MY 2006 MERCURY MONTEGO. ON WEDNESDAY (9-25-13) I WENT TO THE DEALER (DISCOUNT TIRES) FOR A TIRE ROTATION. I WAS TOLD THE ROTATION COULD NOT BE DONE BECAUSE THE TIRES WERE UNSAFE. THE DEALERS DESCRIPTION WAS A CRACKING ISSUE. WHAT REALLY HAS HAPPENED IS THE RUBBER THREAD IS COMING OFF THE CORE OF ALL 4 TIRES (24,000 MILES). BECAUSE OF THIS UNSAFE CONDITION, I PURCHASED 4 NEW TIRES AND THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE PRICE BASED ON THREAD WEAR. AS A CONSUMER I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR AN UNSAFE MANUFACTURING DEFECT. I NOTICED THAT MICHELIN HAS PREVIOUSLY RECALLED THE LATITUDE TIRES FOR SUV'S AND SMALL TRUCKS. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR PASSENGER CARS SINCE THIS IS AN UNSAFE SITUATION AND HAS OCCURRED ON ALL 4 OF MY TIRES. *TR

LOUD CLUNKING FROM REAR SUSPENSION, REPLACED REAR SHOCK AND TIGHTENED TORSION BARS ETC. NOISE WAS REDUCED BUT NEVER FULLY CORRECTED. CONSEQUENTLY MY CAR IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND RUINED ALL 4 TIRES IN JUST 32,000 MILES. SERVICE CENTER IS REFUSING TO FIX UNDER WARRANTY. THEY HAVE STATED THAT THE TIRES CUPPING ON THE INSIDE HAS BEEN AN ISSUE ON THESE VEHICLES SO IS THERE MORE WRONG HERE THAN THEY ARE SAYING. I HAVE MY CAR SERVICED THERE EVERY 3,000 MILES AND TIRES ROTATED EVERY 6,000 MILES. I PAY THEM TO TAKE CARE OF MY CAR, IF I WOULD NOT HAVE NOTICED MY TIRES BEING CUPPED THEY WOULD HAVE NEVER SAID ANYTHING. *TR

NHTSA ID 11151413 · filed Nov 14, 2018

NO CRASH HAS OCCURRED SO FAR. DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELD MATERIAL MAY CAUSE A CRASH IN THE FUTURE. CHEMICAL CHANGES INSIDE THE WINDSHIELD (OR POSSIBLE DELAMINATION OF INTERNAL PLASTIC MATERIAL) IS CAUSING A SPREADING AREA OF THE WINDSHIELD TO BE NOT CLEAR. THE PROBLEM IS ONLY NOTICEABLE IF I AM DRIVING INTO THE SUN. THE SUN SHINING ON THE DEFECTIVE AREA REDUCES THE VISIBILITY THROUGH THAT PORTION OF THE GLASS TO AN UNSAFE DEGREE. THE PROBLEM WAS FIRST NOTICED ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO AND AFFECTED ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF THE FRONT WINDSHIELD. THE PROBLEM HAS STEADILY GROWN WORSE UNTIL ABOUT 15 TO 20% OF THE WINDSHIELD IS AFFECTED. THE PROBLEM WAS DISCUSSED WITH A FORD DEALER AND A FORD AREA REPRESENTATIVE. THEY ADVISED ME TO CHANGE THE WINDSHIELD AND SAVE THE RECEIPT IN THE EVENT A RECALL NOTICE IS ISSUED. I CURRENTLY HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH AN INDEPENDENT AUTO GLASS SUPPLIER TO REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD. *TR

WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, SUDDENLY THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES STOPPED WORKING AND WHEN TO ZERO VALUE. THEY FLICKERED MOMENTARILY AND CONTINUED THIS FOR ABOUT 1 MINUTE WHILE DRIVING. THE APPEARED TO HAVE RESET THEMSELVES. HOWEVER, TWO DAYS AFTER THE INITIAL INCIDENT THE GAUGES STOPPED WORKING AGAIN, AND HAVE CONTINUED TO NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE (I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT) IS THAT WHEN THE GAUGES DON'T WORK, THE REVERSE LIGHTS COME ON. THIS MAKES OTHER DRIVERS THINK I AM REVERSING WHEN I AM NOT. I HAVE DONE ADDITIONAL ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN PUBLISHED BY FORD INDICATING THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THESE MODELS. *JS
