2005 Mercury Sable Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Mercury Sable, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Im owner of Mercury Sable 2005 only 79000 miles..The car problem speed control idle over 2200 so high when stop red light have to brake pedal to slow the vehicle down, and the vehicle failed to accelerrate..

NHTSA ID 11544491 · filed Sep 14, 2023

Purchased vehicle from a private seller 10 days prior to incident. Seller informed me they had replaced throttle body sensor to fix unintended acceleration issues. Drove vehicle home on 4/10/22 with one incident on highway where I attempted to slow vehicle after reaching approx 70mph, and vehicle seemed to jolt/shudder as if unable to brake smoothly. Did not drive again til 4/18/22: I attempted to drive vehicle to tire shop to have new tires installed. After backing out of driveway, I accelerated quickly to approx. 25mph. Acceleration continued past 25mph despite me letting off the gas pedal. I hit the brakes and felt the acceleration continuing to push against them, causing the car to jolt/shake with the application of the brakes. I slowed to a stop at a nearby traffic light, where the engine continued to rev at approx. 2000rpm. When I let off the brakes and drove through the intersection, the car continued to accelerate to around 30-35mph without me pressing the gas pedal at all. I again applied the brakes to regain control of the vehicle, and it again jolted against them as the engine continued to rev excessively. After the next light, I pulled over and placed the car in park. Here, engine stopped revving high, and when I put it in drive again, the issue had ceased. Reading up on complains, have found dozens of similar driver issues with uncontrollable acceleration on similar model-year Mercury Sables and Ford Tauruses, with no clear solution to the issue to allow me to safely drive this vehicle with my child inside. My and my child's safety is placed at risk with increased chance of brake failure, without recourse from manufacturer or NHTSA, who've concluded their investigation despite frequent complaints. Problem has not yet been confirmed by dealer/ISC. Vehicle has not been inspected. No check engine lights or other warning of issue from vehicle. At no point was gas pedal physically stuck in the acceleration position. Issue is known to NHTSA, but not resolved.

AFTER LEAVING A STOP, THE CAR WAS ABLE TO MOVE, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE CAR WOULD NOT CHANGE GEARS AND STAYED IN A NUETRAL POSITION. AFTER SAFELY PARKING THE CAR, IT WILL NOT SHIFT INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE. LOOKING ONLINE I SEE NUMEROUS CONSUMER WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND THE COST IS MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH, BUT IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT THE MANUFACTURER WILL NOT TAKE THE BLAME ON.

NHTSA ID 11270869 · filed Oct 24, 2019

I DRIVED IT ON HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY THERE WAS NOISE AND RMP PASSED 4000 BUT NO ACCELERATED. I MANAGED TO STOPPED ON SHOULDER, AND RESTARTED THE CAR, ENGINE RUN OK, AND CAR WASN'T MOVING, EITHER FORWARD OR BACKWARD. I COULD BE HIT BY OTHER CARS IF I DIDN'T MANAGE TO SHOULDER. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND I FOUND OUT A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT MERCURY SABLE'S TRANSMISSION ISSUES. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND PEOPLE MAY GET KILLED BECAUSE OF SUDDEN TRANSMISSION FAILURE WITHOUT ANY WARNING. MY CAR HAS ABOUT 88700 MILES ON IT.

THIS WAS THE THIRD INCIDENT IN WHICH THE CAR STOPPED ON ME. ONCE BEFORE I WAS LEAVING MY APARTMENT AND ANOTHER TIME WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON MY WAY TO CHURCH. THE THIRD TIME I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE DASH BOARD ALL OF A SUDDEN LITE UP AND ONE OF THE MESSAGES WAS "LOW PRESSURE". THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND SO DID THE GAS PEDAL. THIS WAS THE THIRD INCIDENT IN WHICH THE CAR STOPPED ON ME. (ONE OTHER TIME WHEN I WAS LEAVING MY APARTMENT AND ONE WEDNESDAY EVENING ON MY WAY TO BIBLE STUDY; BOTH TIMES HAD TO COAST TO THE ROAD SIDE AND TRY AND GET IT TO START AGAIN). THE THIRD TIME I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT THE SPEED LIMIT OF 40 MPH. THE CAR'S DASH BOARD LITE UP; GAVE ME ONE MESSAGE THAT SAID "LOW PRESSURE. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND THE GAS PEDAL LOCKED; I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE BEFORE IT COMPLETED LOCKED UP AND STOPPED ONE ME. HAD MY YEAR OLD GRANDSON IN THE CAR WITH ME. I LET THE CAR SIT FOR A WHILE AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED AGAIN. DROVE IT BACK TO MY APARTMENT AND PARKED IT. HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT SINCE THEN - HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT IS RIGHT NOW - THEY WANT TOO MUCH TO HAVE IT REPAIRED; THEY SAY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CYLINDER INSIDE THE IGNITION AND THAT I ALSO NEED A NEW KEY - WANT $1200 TO REPAIR IT. I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS TRYING TO GET IT TO STARTED FOR ABOUT THE PAST 6 MONTHS - HAVE TAKEN IT TO SEVERAL REPAIR SHOPS; PAID THEM BUT NO ONE HAS SOLVED THE ISSUE. FORD STATES THAT MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL (OR THOUGH ONE LADY THERE SAID IT WAS). I BELIEVE THAT IF IT ISN'T, IT SHOULD ME. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO TO GET THIS ISSUE SOLVED? HAS COST ME LOTS OF MONEY, TIME AND FRUSTRATION AND I AM STILL WALKING. *TR

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON. EACH TIME I HAVE THE PART REPAIRED OR REPLACE ONLY TO HAVE IT COME AGAIN WITH A NEW CODE. I HAVE REPLACED NUMEROUS PARTS AND HAVE SPENT OVER $2000 SO FAR. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STILL KEEPS COMING ON. THE CAR RUNS GOOD. SOMETIMES THE TRANSMISSION ACTS UP BUT EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE. I JUST CANT STOP THE CHECK ENGINE LITE TO STAY OFF.
