The defect: CERTAIN MOTOR HOME CHASSIS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC AND ELECTRIC BRAKE SYSTEMS." THE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR MAY NOT FUNCTION AS REQUIRED BY STANDARD.
The risk: IN SOME OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES, THE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR WILL NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE IGNITION IS IN THE START POSITION OR FOR A LOW BRAKE FLUID CONDITION, IF THE BODY BUILDER RELIED SOLELY UPON FORD'S IVM COMPLIANCE STATEMENT FOR THE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPOSITION A LIGHT BULT FROM ONE SOCKET TO ANOTHER, AND REATTACH A WIRE FROM ONE CONNECTOR TO ANOTHER. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 2, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NATIONAL RV AT 1-800-439-3653. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA), AN AGENCY OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, HAS BEEN NOTIFIED THAT NATIONAL RV, INC. AND ITS HOLDING COMPANY, NATIONAL RV HOLDINGS, INC., HAVE FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY. NHTSA HAS BEEN ADVISED THAT OWNERS WHO WISH TO PURSUE CLAIMS RELATED TO SAFETY RECALL REPAIR WORK ON THEIR NATIONAL RV VEHICLES MAY FILE A PROOF OF CLAIM WITH THE UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY COURT FOR THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE DIVISION. THE CASE NUMBER ASSIGNED TO THIS MATTER IS 07-17941. NATIONAL RV 2003 TROPI-CAL MOTORHOME. HAS LEAKED DIESEL FUEL SINCE PURCHASED ON 5/28/03. FOUR ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR - NONE SUCCESSFUL. FUEL HAS SATURATED STORAGE BINS AND CHASSIS. NATIONAL HAS BEEN HARD TO CONTACT AND APPEARS DISINTERESTED IN SOLVING THIS PROBLEM. WE HAVE MADE NUMEROUS PHONE CALLS AND E-MAILS WITH VERY LITTLE RESULTS. WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO USE OUR MOTORHOME AT ALL AND IT IS A HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARD. *JB
