What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 Nissan Rogue, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
On February 6, 2025, while driving at highway speed, the lower radiator hose ruptured, causing complete coolant loss. The CVT transmission overheated, seized, and the engine was destroyed. Vehicle lost motive power at speed without warning. Repair estimate: $20,356.16. Vehicle declared total loss and sold for salvage at $400. Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB14-002b acknowledges this identical failure chain in 2008-2012 Rogues and prescribes a supplemental cooler kit (cost under $85) as the fix. Nissan has not included this VIN in any recall despite the identical mechanism. Loss of power at highway speed constitutes a safety-related defect under 49 U.S.C. § 30118.
My CVT transmission is having major problems and I need to check if there is a recall please email [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The air bag light came on, blinking red around 3 weeks ago. It has been red blinking continuously whenever the vehicle is on since then. I brought the car to my local auto repair shop to check it. They hooked up to it and discovered the issue. They said the code was B1018 (OCS), air bag... They gave me a recall notice that detailed the issue, and said that the dealership would repair this for free. The NHTSA #/Campaign ID# says it includes B8242 (Murano, Rogue, 350Z). I made an appointment at my local Nissan Dealership (Advantage Nissan in Bremerton, WA), and when I went in there they said there are no open recalls and I spent FIVE hours in there. They said they tested passenger side seat airbags and they do NOT work, but here are two options... one is not an option, because we didn't find a whole new seat, but we found another option- take the airbag system out of a seat and put it in yours for $884.98. That's your option. You pay. (Or a new seat would be over $5000, but we can't find one because they don't make them anymore.) I purchased this vehicle in 2019. I haven't gotten any notices about this. This is a SAFETY issue. I can not drive with a passenger in the car. The cost of this issue should be covered- it was a viable recall.
A light on my car's dashboard started flashing, indicating a problem with the airbag. This started after two days of not driving.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE RPM WILL SKYROCKET AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MOVE FORWARD. WE HAVE TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR A FEW HOURS BEFORE IT DRIVES NORMALLY AGAIN. LATELY THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN BUCKING WHEN SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE.
After driving roughly two hours on highway in stop and go rush hour traffic, our 2008 Nissan Rogue lost its ability to accelerate and the RPM would go only slightly above 2000. There were no dashboard warning lights. We pulled over at a rest stop and turned off the engine for ten minutes but the problem persisted. We had to get off the freeway and take back roads out of concern for our safety. We reached our destination, the then car sat for several hours and behaved normally for about an hour on the way back, but then the problem recurred. We only drove short distances for the next month, but on our next long drive the same thing happened again. Our mechanic found no engine codes and does not know what is causing the problem. This all happened only about 3000 miles after we had a new OEM transmission installed. For over two months, we have been unable to take any long trips with this car out of concern for both our ability to complete the trip and for our safety as well as the safety of others.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact's mother owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the front passenger's side air bag sensor warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the message "Passenger Air Bag Off" was displayed while the front passenger's seat was occupied. The contact stated that he connected an OBD reader to the vehicle and retrieved diagnostic codes that indicated that the passenger occupant sensor unit had failed. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V521000 (Air Bags, Electrical System). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the horn started blaring. The contact became aware that the instrument panel and steering wheel was on fire. The Fire Department was contacted and arrived and extinguished the fire. The contact stated that there were no injuries sustained. A Police report was not filed. The manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 178,000.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE GAS GAUGE DROPS TO EMPTY AND THE LOW FUEL LIGHT WILL COME ON WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME. AND THE FUEL GAUGE WILL SHOW HALF FULL AFTER BEING FILLED OR EVEN WHILE DRIVING. IT MAY ALSO SHOW EMPTY AT ANYTIME. IT MAY OR MAY NOT RETURN TO THE TRUE LEVEL IN THE TANK AT SOME POINT. YOU SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THE TANK WITHOUT USING THE TRIP ODOMETER TO TRACK YOUR MILEAGE BETWEEN FILL UPS. THE GAUGE IS OPERATIONALLY USELESS. ADDITIONALLY, THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON WITH THIS MAKING THE STATE INSPECTION A PROBLEM AND REQUIRING A REGULAR CHECK TO MAKE SURE SOMETHING ELSE HASN'T GONE WRONG. MONITOR CODE DISPLAYED IS PO463-FUEL LEVEL SENSOR A CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT. NISSAN REALLY NEEDS TO DIAGNOSE AND FIX WHATEVER THE PROBLEM MAY BE. THIS IS AN ONGOING DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MANY NISSAN ROUGE OWNERS BASED ON WHAT I HAVE SEEN IN COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME PROBLEM POSTED TO THE INTERNET CAR FORUMS AND MY OWN EXPERIENCE.
Will not go up hill only 40 mph had the transmission rebuild still only 40 mph

Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE HESITATED AND SHUTTERED. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE DEFECT WAS ALSO PRESENT WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 146,000.
THE CAR STARTED JOLTING WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP AND THEN EVENTUALLY WENT INTO GEAR AND DROVE. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO INVESTIGATE (PUTTING A TOTAL OF 10 MILES ON THE CAR BETWEEN TIME THE ISSUE STARTED AND DROPPING OFF AT DEALER - MASTRIA NISSAN IN RAYNHAM, MA). DEALER TOLD US THE CVT TRANSMISSION NEEDED FULL REPLACEMENT, BUT CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL DEALER GOT THE PART...IT WOULD JUST SOUND WEIRD. DEALER CALLED ABOUT 5 DAYS LATER AND TOLD US TO DRIVE THE CAR IN TO HAVE THE REPAIR DONE UNDER A NEW WARRANTY NISSAN WAS OFFERING DUE TO EXCESSIVE DEFECTS IN THE CVT TRANSMISSION. ON THE WAY THERE, THE CAR STARTED DECELERATING RAPIDLY ON ITS OWN APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT AND FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL...EVENTUALLY SLOWING TO ABOUT 1 MILE AN HOUR...REALLY LIMPING ALONG AS I TRIED TO MAKE IT UP TO STOP LIGHT TO TURN ONTO A SIDE STREET TO CALL A TOW TRUCK. AS I LIMPED UP TO THE STOP LIGHT, THE TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY SWITCHED INTO LA DIFFERENT GEAR AND ACCELERATED VERY FAST AND SHOT ME OUT INTO THE INTERSECTION THROUGH A RED LIGHT! I JUST BARELY AVOIDED A SERIOUS COLLISION AND THEN IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE CAR OFF THE ROAD AND CALLED THE TOW TRUCK. I AM REPORTING THIS ISSUE BECAUSE THIS CVT DEFECT IS DEADLY!!! NISSAN IS JUST TREATING IT AS A WARRANTY ITEM...BUT IT REALLY NEEDS A FULL RECALL! IT CAN MAKE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATE OR DECELERATE WITHOUT ANY ACTION BY THE DRIVER...AND THE FACT THAT IT HAPPENS MOST AT LOW SPEEDS MEANS IT IS LIKELY TO HAPPEN WHEN SLOWING FOR AN INTERSECTION OR ATTEMPTING TO PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC. IT IS ALSO AN ISSUE BECAUSE IT GOES FROM NO SYMPTOMS TO FULL FAILURE VERY QUICKLY. PLEASE DO SOMETHING TO MAKE NISSAN RECALL THESE CVT TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that a seat replacement was needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed that the repairs were not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 95,117.

My car has started leaking water onto the driver's side floorboard. I thought it might be from the sunroof and cleaned out the channels on both sides of the car. There was a recall years ago about a harness causing a problem with leaking water and possibly causing electrical problems. I took the car in for the repair. They told me that they fixed the problem. My car has started leaking again as it rains. The leak is getting worse and I need some advice. I am retired and have very limited funds. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] ph# [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
1.Frame bracket has rusted out and dealer only sells whole frame. VERY EXPENSIVE *It is obviously an issue which has not been addressed but has been *noted on internet. (went after market to repair still at $775!) 2. Airbags system light now on and was on recall in the past. Dealer will only look at it for $100. * Noted on internet as a continuous issue for some. 3. Cruise Control on past recall. Has not functioned since dealer fixed in recall. *Still turns on by itself and will not go off unless I turn vehicle off. **Definite safety issue** 4. Parking brake not functioning properly was also on recall. If I use it then it will not release all the way and continues to drag. USELESS. Have had repaired 2 times by mechanic since recall. 5. Transmission replaced on SILENT recall with extended warranty. Had issues from almost the start. WHY would I purchase another Nissan of any type? Vehicle 2008 Nissan Rogue is 13 1/2 years old with only 76,000 miles. No way should it have these issues. It has never been in an accident! I love the vehicle but not these issues. I will be replacing this vehicle in the future with a competitor.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the air bag warning light was flashing off and on. Also, while turning the steering wheel in either direction, there was a creaking sound coming from the steering column. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 08V521000 (Air Bag) and 09V411000 (Steering). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 95,000.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT STAYS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD CONSTANTLY EVEN WHEN TIRES ARE AT THE RIGHT PRESSURE LEVELS. FIRESTONE IN CHARLOTTE TESTED THE TPMS AND ISOLATED THAT THE DEVICE IS NOT READING/COMMUNICATING WITH THE CENTRAL ELECTRONICS PORTAL THAT IDENTIFIES ANY TIRE ISSUES. THIS HAS BEEN ON-GOING FOR A FEW YEARS, IT WAS SPORADIC TO BEGIN WITH BUT IS NOW A CONSTANT ISSUE AS SHOWING LOW TIRE PRESSURE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 NISSAN ROGUE. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE TIRE PRESSURE AND AIR BAG WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OCS SENSOR AND AIR PRESSURE SENSOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,000.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving on Highway I-10 at 65 MPH, there was an extremely loud popping sound coming from the vehicle. The contact immediately pulled over, assuming there was a failure with the tire. Upon further investigation with her parents, it was determined that the tires were intact, and the abnormal sound came from the side air bag deploying unintendedly. Additionally, the seat belt seized. The vehicle was towed to the local Nissan dealer, where it was diagnosed with an erroneous rollover detection by the crash sensor, which triggered the deployment of the side air bags. The crash sensor detected a rollover, causing the side airbag to deploy. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and filed a case, and informed the contact that a response would be provided later. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
THE AIRBAG STARTED TO FLASH AND IT WON'T GO AWAY. I KNOW THAT THIS MODEL HAS A RECALLED ON THAT PROBLEM, AND I'D LIKE TO HEAR WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX IT. THANK YOU!

I bought Rogue on the 17th of Sept, 2021. 5 days later something in front on passenger side made noise and my steering wheel went to the right. Mechanic said it was rack and pinion that came loose. It was 2 miles after I got off freeway. I could have killed someone! Or myself.
THE TRACTION LIGHT BLINKS ON AND OFF RANDOMLY AND THE CAR SLIPS/JERKS ON ANY TURNS. ALSO AWD AUTOMATICALLY COMES ON WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY WITHOUT ANY INCLEMENT WEATHER OR BAD ROADS PRESENT.

WHILE DRIVING ~65MPH ON THE INTERSTATE IN STEADY TRAFFIC ON DRY ASPHALT, THE PASSENGER-SIDE REAR DOOR WINDOW "EXPLODED." THE PASSENGER SEATS WERE IN THE DOWN (FLAT) POSITION; MOST OF THE GLASS FELL IN TO THE CAR, BUT ENOUGH BLEW OUT OF THE CAR TO EMBED IN/SCRATCH THE EXTERIOR PAINT. NISSAN DEALER IN THE AREA OF OUR TRAVEL VACUUMED THE GLASS OUT OF THE CAR AND LOOSELY COVERED THE WINDOW SPACE WITH MASKING TAPE AND PLASTIC SEAT COVERS (THE KIND USED TO COVER THE SEAT FOR TRANSPORT AND/OR GARAGE WORK). SINCE THIS WAS A ROAD TRIP SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES FROM HOME, WE HAD TO REINFORCE THE PLASTIC COVER JOB WITH HEAVY CARDBOARD, ADDITIONAL PLASTIC, AND TAPE SO WE COULD DRIVE THE INTERSTATE AND PROTECT THE CAR FROM FURTHER DAMAGE, WIND, AND RAIN. I CONTACTED MY HOME DEALERSHIP TO ADVISE OF THE INCIDENT AND REQUEST THAT PARTS BE ORDERED TO MAKE REPAIR ASAP AFTER I RETURNED HOME AND TO FIND OUT IF INCIDENT IS COVERED BY FACTORY WARRANTY. REPAIR IS DELAYED BY HOLIDAY WEEKEND; WARRANTY COVERAGE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED. LUCKILY, WE HAD NO BACK SEAT PASSENGERS. *TR
