What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2017 Nissan Titan, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Engine is knocking at only 83k miles. No. 7 cylinder issue. Nissan won’t cover repairs even though they’re aware of the design flaw.
I am submitting this complaint on behalf of the vehicle owner. On March 31, 2025 (136,962 miles), the vehicle was brought to Fred Anderson Nissan of [XXX] for Voluntary Emission Recall PD128 (NTB24-061), which required a new Particulate Matter Sensor and ECM reprogramming. One day later, the Check Engine Light illuminated. On April 2, 2025 (137,083 miles), the dealer diagnosed code P2002-00 (DPF Efficiency Below Specs). Repair Order #XXX states: "The new sensor that is now monitoring DPF is able to see this and is setting the code as designed." The dealer's own documentation confirms the fault code was triggered by the recall — not a pre-existing failure. The vehicle had no warning lights before the recall was performed. Nissan Consumer Affairs (Case #XXX) declined goodwill assistance citing mileage, without addressing the documented causal link between the recall and the fault code. The owner now faces a DPF replacement costing several thousand dollars as a direct result of complying with a manufacturer recall. Safety concern: A DPF in confirmed fault condition can trigger unexpected limp mode, including at highway speeds. If other PD128 recipients are experiencing the same recall-induced fault and cannot absorb the repair cost, those vehicles may be operating in a compromised condition. We request NHTSA investigate whether Recall PD128 is creating safety and repair liability for consumers who complied in good faith. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owned a 2017 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, the contact noticed smoke coming from the engine and pulled over to the right side of the road, exited the vehicle with his dog, and five minutes later, he noticed flames coming under the vehicle. No injuries were sustained. The fire department was notified and extinguished the fire. A fire department report was filed. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the local vehicle lot. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V495000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) however the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 143,639.
Purchased a used 2017 Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X 5.0L diesel on 3/8/25. Left the dealership and only made it ~10 miles down the road before the check engine light came on and there was a loud knocking noise. Immediately turned around and went back to the dealership. After diagnosing it I was told it was a fuel injector and that they were replacing it. Received the truck back ~3/20/25. This truck is not my daily driver but the few times I have attempted to drive it the check engine light keeps coming on and I'm getting a message about the REGEN. On 5/28/25 I had the truck towed to my local Nissan dealership. They diagnosed it and although there is still a code for the same injector coming up they said the issue is the wiring harness and quoted me $7000 to repair and it's not covered under my powertrain warranty. After research it seems like this is a common issue in 2017-2019 Nissan Titan 5.0L diesel trucks which will cause the crankshaft to break if not fixed. I am super frustrated that after less than 3 months of ownership I have an undrivable truck requiring thousands of dollars in repairs.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
At about 120,000 miles, my transmission started searching for gears shattering going in limp mode while in drive and then ultimately dying while on the highway. Also, my leaf springs are completely loose. You can just pull them out when you have the truck up on the lift.

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
My truck currently has approximately 112,000 miles. Recently, it suffered a high-pressure CP4 fuel pump failure that sent metal debris throughout the fuel system. The failure has been diagnosed by both an authorized Nissan dealership and an independent diesel repair facility. Both concluded that the fuel system has been contaminated and requires replacement of the high-pressure pump, injectors, fuel rails, fuel lines, and related components. I was driving down the road in Atlanta traffic and on a 2 lane road when my truck all of a sudden started to lose power and stop in the middle of the road. A car behind me had to slam on brakes to avoid running into the back of my truck. There was no warning lights or anything. I was able to push the truck to a nearby gas station to get it out of traffic.
I have owned this vehicle since February 2025 and as of June 2026 the CP4 Fuel pump failed and causes the Cummings engine to shutdown and the vehicle is now immobile. According to recent research and diagnosis, the cost of repair will exceed the value of the vehicle which I am still paying on. It is my understanding that a class action lawsuit for this particular issue is in progress and Nissan is not taking ownership of the faulty part. I now have a vehicle I can’t drive and I own a farm. I used this vehicle for towing and hauling livestock and now this issue is affecting my business. Nissan needs to repair or replace my vehicle given the fact they used substandard parts.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
Pulled up to a stop light my truck turned off had got towed back and turner the truck on and the engine had rod nock and is over heating and not running smooth
The vehicle is available for inspection immediately by all parties. While driving down the highway, the truck started a vibration, without any warning indicators. The vehicle was taken to the next travel center truck shop. The writer acknowledged the vibration like a misfire, but no codes were present. He recommended another shop or dealer. A detour was made to the nearest Nissan dealership. On the way, the truck stumbled with a violent vibration and shut down on the road without warning lights. There was a complete loss of power from the engine on the highway, giving way to the risk of being hit by other motorists and blocking traffic. Since the engine shut down, there was also a loss of power steering, giving high risk to the possibility of an accident. The truck was unable to restart. The vehicle shut down in the middle of the desert, exposing my family to unsafe environmental conditions. The truck was towed the remaining way to the dealer. The next business day, the technician got the truck started and verified the concern. The tech requested additional time for teardown which was approved to remove the oil pan for inspection. I was quoted over $37,000 to repair “catastrophic engine failure.” There were metal shavings found in the oil pan “the size of a computer mouse” from somewhere on the crankshaft. The dealer found that the check engine light came on during service but did not provide the codes. Nissan refuses to assist with repair due to warranty time and secondhand ownership. Nissan was offered to inspect the vehicle but has declined.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2017 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the air bag warning light continued to blink off and on. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 223,215.
Truck has been diagnosed and the airbag sensor seems to be at fault. The sensor light is blinking and if there’s an accident the airbags will not deploy. This is a huge liability and safety concern
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Original Problem: 2017 Nissan Tital Truck - Miles: 82706 Issue 1) Purchased the vehicle and owner of the Nissan dealership stated it had a "bumper-to-bumper" 100,000 miles warranty on this model truck. He never mentioned the warranty expired after 5 years in December 2022. Issue 2) Power Steering pump started making a "growling" noise Went to the local Nissan dealership and they determined a seal in the pump needed to be replaced. Found out that the seal has been back ordered from Nissan Japan due to the "high demand and part failure". Local dealership wanted to replace the entire rack & pinion system at a cost of several thousands of dollars. Contacted the Nissan Corporation to help with the warranty issue and replace only the defective seal. Local dealership will not call me now that I took the issues to Nissan Corporation. Nissan is stating that there are 67 seals on back order due to the high volume of requests and I'm now with a truck I haven't been able to drive for 3 weeks. Please look into this seal failure for a recall because I cannot afford to replace the entire rack & pinion system with 9 hours of labor cost at $200 per hour plus the cost of the entire rack & pinion assembly when I only need the seal replaced!! please help

Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
There has been multitude of this issue if you search the titanxd forums. Same thing happens to everyone. ABS, traction control, and the 4wd warning flashes on the dash. After this happens, it changes the characteristics of how the truck drives. Rapid shift, high RPM shifts, which are extremely hard to control on the highway. Also mentioning the ABS brake not working. Nissan has been changing out transfer cases because of this. The vehicle is extremely dangerous cause of these issues. I hope this makes headway to Nissan Corporate.
NISSAN OF IRVINE FAILED TO PUT ALL SIX LUG NUTS BACK ON MY DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE AFTER A TIRE ROTATION. AS I WAS GETTING ON THE FREEWAY LESS THAN A MILE FROM THE DEALERSHIP I BEGAN TO LOSE CONTROL OF MY TRUCK AND MY WHEEL CAME OFF.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
Right Rear passenger seat, cushion inside the seat broken, when a passenger seat has is a metal under the broken cushion very uncomfortable it causes pain in the buttocks.
We were not told of a recall, however the service department said we requested a check for recall back in 08/2019 when vehicle was taken in for oil change. Our next visit was due to an engine light coming on, nothing was found & removed from dash. The vehicle then had to constantly be jumped, dealership changed battery. Vehicle still had problems starting, dealership changed starter. A month later vehicle still not starting, parking sensor light flashed real fast, dash screen kept showing “no key detected, key system error, lights flickered & radio made a loud popping sound, passenger seat kept going forward/back, up & down, making funny sound under hood, gauges going up & down, wipers going off.Upon charging battery again, moments later won’t start again. I am afraid this all has to do with the recall they had on the alternator harness wiring, but dealer keeps saying there is no recall because there is currently no open recall on the vehicle. Is there anything I can do about this? Have been in contact with dealership and Nissan Consumer. Nissan Consumer informed they are not able to purchase the vehicle back or offer another source of transportation because there is no recall. Vehicle is currently being sent to dealer again…will not start.

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.

I CAN'T READ THE VEHICLE INFORMATION SCREEN WHILE DRIVING IN DAYLIGHT BRIGHTER THAN HEAVY OVERCAST. THIS IS WITHOUT SUNGLASSES. ADDING SUNGLASSES MAKES IT WORSE. I MUST LEAN FORWARD AND SHIELD THE SCREEN, AND THEN SQUINT TO READ THE DATA DISPLAYED. I KNOW ONE SHOULD PULL OFF THE ROAD WHEN A WARNING CHIME AND MESSAGE APPEAR, BUT YOU KNOW HOW HUMAN NATURE IS. NISSAN SAYS IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. IT IS FOR ME.
THE VEHICLE INFORMATION DISPLAY SCREEN (LOCATED TO THE LEFT OF THE SPEEDOMETER) WHEN SET TO ITS BRIGHTEST (HIGHEST) SETTING IS TOO DIM TO READ, WHILE SETTING UPRIGHT BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL, DURING NORMAL DAYLIGHT HOURS. VIEWING THIS SCREEN DURING NIGHTTIME DRIVING IS OKAY. NISSAN WAS CONTACTED AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE VIDS WAS WORKING AS DESIGNED AND CAN NOT BE MADE ANY BRIGHTER, TO BE VIEWED DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD, AS THE INFORMATION DISPLAYED ON THE VID SCREEN MAY ALERT THE DRIVER OF POSSIBLE VEHICLE MALFUNCTIONS.

MY TITAN CAME WITH 20" CHROME WHEELS BUT WHEN I PURCHASED THE TRUCK I ADDED A NISSAN APPROVED LIFT KIT AND TIRES/WHEELS. THE DEALER DID NOT RETURN ANY OF THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT YESTERDAY I HAD WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A BLOW OUT THE TIRE SEPARATED FROM THE SIDE WALL LUCKILY I COULD GET OFF THE INTERSTATE WELL SINCE I ADDED THE LIFT AND TIRES AND DID NOT GET THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT BACK THE LUGS DO NOT FIT THE SPARE TIRE SO MY TRUCK HAD TO BE LIMPED IN THE DEALER IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT DO NOT GIVE BACK THE ORIGINAL LUGS AND ARE NOT CONCERNED THAT THIS SPARE TIRE COULD EASILY COME OFF GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. I WAS GOING DOWN INTERSTATE 20/59 WHEN THIS HAPPENED

PRO COMP LIFT KIT WAS INSTALLED BY DEALERSHIP. IN JANUARY 29, 2018 WHILE TRAVELING AT ABOUT 20 MPH ON A FLAT, PAVED, RESIDENTIAL CITY STREET, A "NUT/BOLT" CAME OFF, CAUSING THE SUSPENSION TO COLLAPSE. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO BECOME INCAPACITATED, WHEN LEFT REAR TIRE WAS PUSHED INTO REAR WHEEL WELL. THERE ARE ALSO ISSUES WITH FRONT LEFT TIRE RUBBING AGAINST WHEEL WELL AND "SLIPPING" WHEN TURNING TO PARK.

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHEN I'M CRUISING THE RPM FLUTTERS AND THE TRUCK SEEMS TO BE CONFUSED AS TO WHAT GEAR IT SHOULD BE ON. ACCELERATION SOMETIMES IS HESISTANT AND DELAYED. THE GAS PEDAL NEEDS TO BE ALMOST FULL DEPRESSED FOR THE TRUCK TO ACCELERATE. THE FRONT BUMPER IS CROOKED. I CHECKED FOR ANY GIVE ON THE STRUCTURE BUT THERE WERE NONE. THERE WAS NO COLLISION INVOLVED.
TRANSMISSION SHIFTER CAN POP OUT OF GEAR. SAW IT HAPPEN FIRST WITH GOING FROM DRIVE AND SWITCHING TO NEUTRAL. RECENTLY EXPERIENCED SEVERAL TIMES IT GOING FROM PARK TO REVERSE. HAPPENS WHILE SHIFTING THE SHIFTER. AFTER EXITING THE VEHICLE THE ALARM LETS YOU KNOW CAR IS IN GEAR. IF YOUR LUCKY THE TRUCK DOES NOT ROLL YOU OVER WITH THE OPEN DOOR. HAS BACKED INTO A BUILDING AND BUSTED OUT THE RIGHT TAIL LIGHTS AND CRUSHED SIDE OF THE BED.

I PURCHASED A NEW 2017 NISSAN TITAN XD FROM TIM DAHLE NISSAN - SOUTHTOWNE ON 11/25/17. PRIOR TO PICK UP I REQUESTED THE DEALER COMPLETE AN OPEN SAFETY RECALL REGARDING THE REAR SEAT BELTS. THE RECALL IS 17V-268. I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE RECALL HAD BEEN COMPETED PRIOR TO DELIVERY TO ME. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER I WAS INFORMED BY NISSAN CORPORATE THAT THE ABOVE NOTED RECALL HAD NOT BEEN COMPLETED AS I HAD BEEN TOLD. IT IS ILLEGAL FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO SELL A NEW VEHICLE WITH AN OPEN SAFETY RECALL. THIS IS A CLEAR VIOLATION OF EXISTING FEDERAL LAW. THE DEALER HAS BEEN MADE AWARE AND MADE ZERO ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY THE MATTER OR OFFER TO COMPLETE THE RECALL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 NISSAN TITAN. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V268000 (SEAT BELTS); HOWEVER, THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER (CLAY COOLEY NISSAN, 39690 LYNDON B JOHNSON FWY, DALLAS, TX 75237) WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AT 800-424-9153 ON OCTOBER 25, 2017 AND WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE NEXT WEEK. THE CONTACT WAITED OVER A MONTH AND CALLED THE MANUFACTURER BACK AT THE SAME NUMBER, BUT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. CASE NUMBER: 28651546 WAS PROVIDED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
