1998 Oldsmobile Achieva Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, A BURNING ODOR WAS DETECTED FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE IDLED AND STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

THE CHECK ENGINE AND LOW COOLANT LIGHTS APPEAR OFTEN AND THE ENGINE IDLES AT AN ABNORMAL SETTING. WHICH CAUSES THE ENGINE TO RUN WARMER THAN IT SHOULD AND CAUSING THE BRAKE PADS TO BE REPLACED LONG BEFORE THEY SHOULD BE. AS FOR THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT, THERE IS NOT A NEED TO ADD COOLANT BECAUSE ITS JUST A LITTLE LESS THAN FULL. AND AS FOR THE HIGH IDLE, THE CAR HAS ACCELERATED AT TIMES BY ITS SELF TO 45 MPH.
