PARKING BRAKE

The defect: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH BENDIX SR-7 SPRING BRAKE MODULATING VALVES, THE INTERNAL RUBBER CHECK VALVE MAY LEAK CAUSING A DELAY IN THE APPLICATION OF THE SPRING BRAKES TO PARK THE VEHICLE AFTER THE OPERATOR PULLS THE DASH VALVE BUTTON.
The risk: THIS COULD DELAY OR FAILURE IN APPLYING THE PARKING BRAKES WHICH COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE ROLL AWAY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: OSHKOSH IS WORKING WITH BENDIX TO REPAIR THESE VEHICLES (PLEASE SEE 07E-037). BENDIX WILL INSTALL A CHECK VALVE REPAIR KIT FOR THE AFFECTED SR-7 SPRING BRAKE MODULATING VALVE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 19, 2007. POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE

The defect: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH ARVINMERITOR AXLE ASSEMBLIES, THE TORQUE ROD TOWER HAS A NONCONFORMING LOCATION AND WELD. THE WELD CAN CRACK, LEADING TO THE TANDEM AXLE LOSING ITS ANCHOR POINT, CAUSING THE DRIVELINE TO BEND TO AN ANGLE OUTSIDE ITS OPERATING PERIMETERS.
The risk: IN TURN, THIS CAN RESULT IN THE DRIVELINE BREAKING OR FORCING THE ENGINE TO STOP. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE FOR THE TANDEM AXLE TO DROP TO THE GROUND AND TURN UNDER THE VEHICLE CREATING A CONDITION THAT MIGHT INCLUDE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TORQUE TOWERS ON THE REAR TANDEM AND, IF CRACKS ARE FOUND, THE TORQUE TOWER WILL BE REWELDED ACCORDING TO INSTRUCTIONS. OSHKOSH HAS TELEPHONED ALL OWNERS IN SEPTEMBER 2006, ADVISING THEM THAT UNTIL THE TORQUE TOWER IS REWELDED, OWNERS SHOULD INSPECT FOR CRACKS AT THE BASE OF THE TORQUE TOWERS ON THE REAR TANDEM ON A WEEKLY BASIS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 15, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT OSHKOSH AT 1-920-233-9427.

What a recall is

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
