The defect: KALMAR IS RECALLING 612 MY 1997-1007 OTTAWA 30, 50, AND 60 DOT/EPA TERMINAL TRACTORS EQUIPPED WITH SUSPENSIONED REAR AXLES OR "OTTO-RIDE" REAR SUSPENSIONS FOR FAILING TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 106, 'BRAKE HOSES.' THE AIR BRAKE HOSE ASSEMBLY WAS INCORRECTLY MANUFACTURED.
The risk: IF A FAILURE OCCURRED IN THE AIR LINE INSTALLED ON THE SPRING BRAKE SIDE OF THE BRAKE CHAMBER, THE SPRING BRAKES WOULD APPLY. SUDDEN APPLICATION OF THE SPRING BRAKE WHILE TRAVELING COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HOSE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 22, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KALMAR AT 1-785-229-6327.

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
