2022 Porsche Taycan Powertrain (other) Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the powertrain system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Powertrain (other) reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

While driving in traffic on a busy highway, I heard a loud clunk from the rear of the car and it instantly decelerated from 70+ miles per hour to 22 miles per hour, where it stayed and would not go faster. I had to get across 3 lanes of traffic to exit. Thereafter, the car would not move and had to be put on a flatbed to get to the Porsche dealer. Note that for 2 years prior the transmission had emitted a whine while in first gear. The dealership (Porsche Austin) said it was normal, but it is a known problem among owners, possibly related to the input shaft bearing. They did not fix it when the problem was first raised. The dealership has diagnosed it only as a transmission error, without providing further detail on what is actually wrong. I should be able to access my dash cam footage if helpful.

Driving at 45 MPH, and suddenly the car lost the ability to accelerate. It has no power/torque. It seemed to be able to maintain the speed (but not entirely sure or if it was coasting). I had limited areas on the road to turn so took last possible turn to pull over. A shutdown/start corrected the situation. No warning lights or indicators of any kind appeared. Cannot reproduce, which makes this situation more frightening. No other symptoms or warnings before.

While driving on the city streets, the vehicle would not accelerate properly. At a stop sign, when pressing the accelerator, the vehicle started to jerk forward slowly and would not accelerate properly. A turtle started to flash on the cluster display. Trying to get to a safe location, the vehicle kept jerking forward slowly while slowly increasing speed and flashing the turtle icon.

While driving on the freeway at 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly began to quickly decelerate. Pressing the accelerator pedal had no effect. The car behind me quickly swerved to avoid hitting me. I was able to maneuver the car onto the shoulder and very slowly exited the freeway. I noticed a warning light shaped like a turtle on the cluster display flashing. I stopped fully and turned off the vehicle. The car was then towed to the nearest Porsche dealer. One week later, the dealer was inspected the vehicle and was unable to reproduce the issue. No repair was performed and Car was returned.

While the vehicle is in both Drive and reverse, the car randomly will shift itself into either neutral or park without warning. The first event occurred while in reverse and actively moving, the car shifted into neutral on its own. No warning lights or messages appeared. The following 2 incidents, while driving on city streets, at a stop sign in one instance and at a stop light in the other, the car shifted into park within seconds of the vehicle coming to a stop. Also, no warning lights or messages occurred. I have contacted my local Porsche dealer to see if there was any service bulletins or a know fix, and was informed that by the service advisor, that she believes this is normal operation because she has heard of it happening. This situation has been dangerous each time it has happened, as I was in traffic, and unaware that my vehicle no longer in gear until I tried to accelerate, and my car was unresponsive. I can’t imagine how your vehicle not being in the gear you put it in, is not a safety concern. I also fear that the vehicle may go into park while at highway speeds, and be catastrophic.

When the car was in Drive (D) mode but stationary at a red light, it abruptly went in to park (P) without any user intervention. Had to reengage the drive mode to move forward. Problem has occurred at least twice before (months apart) without any reproducibility. I did bring it to the dealer once but they did not find any abnormal logs. Latest occurrence on 7/6/2022 at approximately 6:15 PM Lost power steering assist completely in my driveway while backing out of the garage in reverse mode. No warning signs on the cluster. Could not turn the car. Only way to get power steering assist back was to turn off the car completely, wait for 10 seconds and turn it back on again. Incident happened on 7/7/2022 at 7:45 AM

Car would go in to P or N during slow moving situations. Could of been rear ended or stuck in the middle of a intersection. Many Taycan owners have had the same issue. First time I was in stop and go traffic, as I let off the brake the car went into N. Second time after a few lights, car was in hold. Noticed the car did not go when light turned green when giving power. It was at P.

Multiple times, after coming to a full stop, the car has silently shifted from D to N or P. I often only notice once I want to drive off again, and am unable to. It happened the first time after only around 100 miles, now with over 3500 miles on the car it still happens from time to time.

Car shifted into park unexpectedly mutiple times. First was pulling into a parking spot, going about 2mph and car jolted to a halt, noticed it was in park. Second time I was already stopped, waiting at a red light. Car shifted into park. Both times I was able to put car into drive and resume my driving.

At low speeds the vehicle removed itself from drive D and shifted into neutral N. The vehicle started jerking forward and back while still moving. Once I put it back in drive it went away. No one was behind me so no accident resulted.

The contact owns a 2022 Porsche Taycan. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle shifted into neutral independently, and the vehicle came to a complete stop in the road. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated the electrical functions on the console was inoperable. The contact was unable to shift the vehicle into gear. The contact stated that during the failure there was a message which stated to turn off and restart the vehicle, while the vehicle was still being driven. The contact drove the vehicle home safely and then had the vehicle towed to a local dealer. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 3,500.

Car went into park once and neutral twice while stopped at approximately 1300 and 1700 miles. I took the car to Porsche dealer and was told they would investigate. After two weeks I requested car be returned. They had investigated but couldn't reproduce however car was only driven about 80 miles. They offered to investigate further on my car as they had installed diagnostic software and devices. They then decided they had found an employees Taycan doing the same and removed the diagnostics and returned my car to me.

Drive mode for my 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S has been abruptly changing from Drive to either Neutral or Park on its own. Noticed within first week or so of ownership. Primarily has occurred during low to no speed situations (e.g., turning into a parking spot and car switches to Neutral abruptly or stopped at a red light and switches to Park). However, there has been one instance where drive mode switched to Neutral while I was going through an intersection resulting in a near crash with the vehicle in front as brakes were unresponsive while in Neutral. Had I not been able to react in time the safety of the passengers in the vehicle in front as well as my wife and I would have been severely compromised. Each of these occurrences were without warning messages (despite the car having a host of other false alarms around collisions, e-sound issues, etc. that occur regularly). The issue was reported to the dealer on multiple occasions. During the first inspection they told me that there were numerous error logs that had been cleared out and that it should be fine. The issue did not resurface for another couple weeks after which I brought car back in and no error logs were found (and for some reason error logs from prior inspection were not kept for records). They took car in for extended test drive and was unable to replicate issue and said Porsche NA did not acknowledge the issue. So nothing to be done unless I could record the issue as it happens (i.e., trying to record my drive mode selector while driving). However upon reiterating the risk to safety and numerous reports of identical issues raised by other drivers, they reached back out to Porsche and eventually found that Porsche now acknowledges the issue but does not know when it will be addressed. Even after their second inspection, the issue has still continued.
