The defect

VEHICLE EQUIPMENT: PETROLEUM TANKER TRAILERS EQUIPED WITH BENDIX AIR BRAKE SYSTEM AIR DRYERS. THE RETAINING BOLTS FOR THE REED COVERS ON EITHER END OF THE TRAILER AIR DRYER MAY CRACK CAUSING THE BOLT HEADS TO COME OFF.

The risk

THE AIR BRAKE SYSTEM CAN LEAK AIR OUT FROM THE AIR DRYER CAUSING A LOW AIR WARNING BUZZER AND EVENTUALLY THE TRAILER PARKING BRAKES COMING TO FULL APPLY OR THE TRAILER'S PARKING BRAKES CAN ENGAGE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
