Recall 02E047000: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not to every vehicle of a model year. Check your VIN with NHTSA or your manufacturer's dealer to confirm whether a recall affects your vehicle.

Units potentially affectedThe manufacturer's own estimate of how many vehicles or items of equipment may contain the defect. It is not a count of failures, and not every unit in the range is necessarily affected.

What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

LIFT U PLASTIC TANKS OR RESEVIORS FOR HYDRAULIC FLUID ON THE WHEELCHAIR LIFT MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 11, 2000, AND AUGUST 16, 2002. THE PLASTIC TANK WILL MELT IF THE PUMP MOTOR OVERHEATS. THE MELTED TANK WILL DUMP HYDRAULIC FLUID AND THE EMERGENCY HAND PUMP WILL NOT FUNCTION.

The risk

IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY, A WHEELCHAIR PASSENGER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE LIFT TO DEBOARD THE BUS.

The remedy

LIFT U WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND REPLACE THE PLASTIC TANK WITH A METAL ONE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2002. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT LIFT U AT 209-838-2400.

Notes

ALSO, CUSTOMERS CAN CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

NHTSA publishes recalls against vehicles we may not have imported, and equipment recalls are not always tied to a specific make and model. Check the official record for what it covers.
