Units potentially affectedThe manufacturer's own estimate of how many vehicles or items of equipment may contain the defect. It is not a count of failures, and not every unit in the range is necessarily affected.

What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

ON CERTAIN CLASS 8 HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH R. H. SHEPPARD M90 STEERING GEARS, AN INCORRECT HOSE WAS USED FOR THE HIGH-PRESSURE LINE BETWEEN THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND THE STEERING GEAR. THE HOSE IS RATED AT 2000 PSI, WHILE IT SHOULD BE RATED AT 3000 PSI.

The risk

THIS HOSE COULD DEVELOP A LEAK OR BURST WHILE IN SERVICE. SHOULD THE LINE BURST, STEERING CONTROL WOULD STILL BE MAINTAINED, BUT A LOSS OF POWER ASSIST WILL BE EXPERIENCED.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING HOSE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 22, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT MACK AT 1-610-709-3011.

Notes

MACK TRUCK RECALL NO. 272. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
