Units potentially affectedThe manufacturer's own estimate of how many vehicles or items of equipment may contain the defect. It is not a count of failures, and not every unit in the range is necessarily affected.

What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES EQUIPPED WITH SLIDE-OUT ROOMS, THE MICROPROCESSOR THAT CONTROLS THE SLIDE-OUT OPERATION GENERATES A FALSE SITUATION WHICH TELLS THE SLIDE-OUT MECHANISM TO OPERATE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, A SECTION OF THE MOTOR HOME EXTENDS OUT BY UP TO 30 INCHES.

The risk

THIS CAN OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL ADD AN EXTERNAL PROTECTION CONTROLLED BY A MANUAL COMMAND. IN ADDITION, AN INSTRUCTION DESCRIBING HOW TO DEACTIVATE THE SLIDE-OUT MOTOR WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS. THIS WILL ELIMINATE THE RISK BEFORE THE REMEDY IS PERFORMED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 15, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT PREVOST AT 1-418-831-5432.

Notes

CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
