What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

ON CERTAIN ELECTRIC PASSENGER VEHICLES. DUE TO A CHANGE IN THE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT FOR THE MOTOR CONTROL UNIT, THE POWER SUPPLY UNIT CAN GO INTO THE FAIL-SAFE MODE UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF LOW BATTERY CHARGE AND FULL ACCELERATION AT SPEEDS GREATER THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR.

The risk

THIS CAN RESULT IN A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER BY THE DRIVE MOTOR.

The remedy

THE LESSORS/OPERATORS OF THE 15 VEHICLES WILL BE CONTACTED AND A TECHNICIAN WILL BE SENT TO REPLACE THE MOTOR CONTROL UNIT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 15, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Notes

CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
