What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

CERTAIN SCHOOL BUSES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, "BUS EMERGENCY EXITS AND WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE." THESE BUSES DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE EMERGENCY EXIT REQUIREMENTS.

The risk

DURING AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, THIS CONDITION COULD PREVENT PASSENGERS FROM EXITING THE BUS, WHICH COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL ADD ONE ROOF EXIT IN THE CENTER OF THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. ALL OWNERS HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED AND ARRANGEMENTS MADE TO REMEDY THEIR BUSES.

IC RECALL NO. 03302.CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
