What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH BENDIX SL4 STOP LIGHT SWITCHES, IMPROPER LUBRICATION WAS APPLIED TO THE PISTON MECHANISM IN THE SWITCH.

The risk

THIS LACK OF PROPER LUBRICATION CAN CAUSE THE SWITCH TO STICK, RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE STOP LAMPS STAYING ILLUMINATED OR FAILING TO EXTINGUISH PROMPTLY. IF THE STOP LAMPS FAIL TO PERFORM AS DESIGNED, A CRASH COULD RESULT WITHOUT WARNING.

The remedy

BENDIX WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND PROVIDE A FREE REMEDY. BENDIX HAS NOT YET PROVIDED THE AGENCY WITH A NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY SCHEDULE. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CAPACITY AT 903-759-0610.

Notes

CUSTOMERS CAN CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION?S AUTO SAFETY OUTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
