The defect
CERTAIN BUSES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, "BUS EMERGENCY EXITS AND WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE." THESE BUSES LACK THE CORRECT NUMBER AND SIZE OF EMERGENCY EXITS.
The risk
IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, AN OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO EXIT THE BUS, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE ONE OF THE REGULAR WINDOWS ON THE BUSES WITH AN EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHAMPION AT 800-331-5761.
Notes
CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
