What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

CERTAIN MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH THE ALLISON SERIES 2500 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DO NOT HAVE A PARK POSITION AVAILABLE INSIDE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER CONTROL ASSEMBLY INDICATING A PARK POSITION IS AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION BY THE VEHICLE OPERATOR.

The risk

THIS MAY MISLEAD THE VEHICLE OPERATOR INTO PLACING THE SHIFT LEVER INTO THE INDICATED PARK POSITION AND EXITING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT APPLYING THE PARKING BRAKE. THIS COULD CAUSE UNEXPECTED OR UNCONTROLLED MOVEMENT OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING WHICH MAY RESULT IN VEHICLE CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE FREE OF CHARGE THE SHIFT ASSEMBLY IF IT INDICATES THE INCORRECT PARK POSITION. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN DIESEL AT 972-756-5500.

Notes

CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
