Units potentially affectedThe manufacturer's own estimate of how many vehicles or items of equipment may contain the defect. It is not a count of failures, and not every unit in the range is necessarily affected.

What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTOR COACHES EQUIPPED WITH ZF/ARENS AS TRONIC SHIFT SELECTORS, A CELL PHONE PLACED IN THE PROXIMITY OF THE SHIFTER TOUCH PAD COULD CAUSE THE DISPLAY TO CHANGE FROM "R" (REVERSE) TO "D" (DRIVE) SHOULD THE PHONE RECEIVE A CALL.

The risk

THIS INTERFERENCE CAN CAUSE IMPROPER SHIFTING OF THE TRANSMISSION, AS FORWARD GEAR CAN BE ENGAGED FROM NEUTRAL ONLY, IF THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN STOPPED, AND IF THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS BEEN DEPRESSED. IF THE MALFUNCTION OCCURS WHILE 'R' (REVERSE) IS BEING SELECTED, THE SHIFTER MAY POSSIBLY CHANGE TO 'D' (DRIVE), INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

VAN HOOL IS WORKING WITH ZF/ARENS TO DEVELOP A MORE EFFECTIVE REMEDY FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VAN HOOL AT 1-800-222-2871 OR ZF AT 1-734-416-6200.

Notes

CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
