The defect

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLES THAT SUPPLY POWER FROM THE BATTERIES TO THE STARTER MAY BE ROUTED NEAR THE ENGINE'S EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE EXCESS HEAT GENERATED BY THE MANIFOLD CAN CAUSE THE CABLE'S INSULATION TO MELT, EXPOSING BARE WIRE.

The risk

THIS CONDITION MAY CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT OR A FIRE, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BATTERY CABLES AND REPLACE THEM IF NECESSARY AND REROUTE THEM AWAY FROM THE ENGINE EXHAUST MANIFOLD FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 22, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT INTERNATIONAL AT 1-800-448-7825.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
