The defect

Spartan Motors USA (Spartan) certain model year 2004-2010 Emergency Response Gladiator tractor drawn aerial fire apparatus vehicles manufactured November 18, 2004, to July 26, 2010. The tiller frame of the affected vehicles may crack near the outriggers.

The risk

If the tiller frame fully cracks, the vehicle may be unstable, increasing the risk of injury to someone on the ladder.

The remedy

Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will install reinforcements plates, free of charge. The recall began on November 18, 2016. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-5008.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
