The defect
Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2019 International LT heavy diesel trucks equipped with feature codes 29WAY, 504312, and 504455. The lightweight brake drums with slack adjusters may drag against the brakes causing the drums to overheat which can result in the brake drum cracking, separating from the vehicle or the brakes becoming inoperative.
The risk
If the brake drum separates or if the brakes become inoperative, it can increase the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Navistar has notified owners, and dealers will replace the brake drums and slack adjusters and replace the brake linings, free of charge. The recall began on May 23, 2018. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 18507.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
