Units potentially affectedThe manufacturer's own estimate of how many vehicles or items of equipment may contain the defect. It is not a count of failures, and not every unit in the range is necessarily affected.

What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES, THE HOSE USED TO SUPPLY VACUUM TO THE BRAKE POWER UNIT OR VACUUM RESERVE TANK MAY HAVE BEEN OF THE WRONG MATERIAL. THIS HOSE COULD DEFORM SUFFICIENTLY DURING NORMAL OPERATION TO CAUSE A REDUCTION IN VACUUM ASSIST TO THE BRAKE POWER UNIT. THIS WOULD RESULT IN GREATER BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT BY OPERATOR AND AN INCREASE IN VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCES.

The remedy

THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REMOVE INCORRECT HOSE AND INSTALL THE PROPER VACUUM HOSE.

Notes

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRUCKS.SYSTEM: SERVICE BRAKES; VACUUM HOSE.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL ANDAN ACCIDENT.NOTE: UNTIL THE NECESSARY CORRECTIONS ARE MADE, THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE OPERATEDAT REDUCED SPEEDS, VEHICLE FOLLOWING DISTANCES SHOULD BE INCREASED, AND DRIVERSHOULD BECOME FAMILIARIZED WITH PARKING (HAND) LEVER OPERATION SO THAT IT CANBE USED TO SUPPLEMENT THE SERVICE (FOOT) BRAKE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
