What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

THE INVOLVED VEHICLES DO NOT CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY". WHEN SUBJECTED TO A 30 M.P.H. FIXED BARRIER COLLISION TEST, THE FRAME SIDE RAILS COLLAPSED AND THE BRACKETRY ATTACHED TO ONE OF THE RAILS SUPPORTING THE FUEL ASSEMBLY RUPTURED OR PUNCTURED THE FUEL TANK. THIS COULD ALLOW EXCESSIVE FUEL SPILLAGE.

The remedy

DEALER WILL REMOUNT THE FUEL TANK TO THE BODY FLOOR PAN AND STRUCTURE, AND SHIELD THE FRAME REINFORCEMENT TO PREVENT PENETRATION.

Notes

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT TRUCKS.SYSTEM: STRUCTURE; FRAME SIDE RAILS.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: FUEL SPILLAGE, RESULTING FROM A VEHICLE IMPACT, COULDLEAD TO A VEHICLE FIRE AND SERIOUS PASSENGER INJURIES.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
