What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT", BECAUSE SOME TRAILERS DO NOT HAVE FRONT AND REAR SIDE MARKER LAMPS AND REFLECTORS OR FRONT AND REAR CLEARANCE LAMPS AND REFLECTORS. IN ADDITION, SOME TRAILERS HAVE IMPROPERLY LOCATED FRONT AND REAR SIDE MARKER LAMPS AND REFLECTORS OR FRONT AND REAR CLEARANCE LAMPS AND REFLECTORS.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL CHECK TRAILERS TO SEE IF LIGHTS AND REFLECTIVE DEVICES ARE INSTALLED AND ARE IN THE PROPER PLACE. IF NOT, THEY WILL BE INSTALLED OR PLACED IN THE PROPER POSITION. THIS WILL BE DONE AT NO COST TO OWNERS.

Notes

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRAILERS.SYSTEM: LIGHTING & COMMUNICATIONS; MARKER LAMPS.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: IN CASES OF REDUCED VISIBILITY, IMPROPER LOCATION OROMISSION OF EITHER MAY CAUSE OTHER DRIVERS TO MISJUDGE THE WIDTH OR LENGTH OFTHE TRAILER. THIS CAN LEAD TO A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
