The defect

THE INVOLVED VEHICLES DO NOT HAVE A PROTECTIVE FUEL TANK SHIELD. AS A RESULT THE 137 INCH AND 161 INCH WHEELBASE CHASSIS CABS FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY". IF THE ABOVE VEHICLES UNDERGO FRONTAL IMPACT, THE DRIVE SHAFT FRONT UNIVERSAL JOINT MAY COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE FUEL TANK, RESULTING IN FUEL SPILLAGE.

The remedy

THE INVOLVED VEHICLES WILL BE INSPECTED AND, IF NECESSARY, A MID-SHIP FUEL TANK SHIELD WILL BE INSTALLED AT NO CHARGE TO OWNER.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
