What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

VEHICLES FAIL TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 222, "SCHOOL BUS PASSENGER SEATING AND CRASH PROTECTION". THE SEAT BACK CUSHIONS MAY NOT BE SOFT ENOUGH AND THE SEAT FRAMES MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE SEATS.

The remedy

IMPROPER SEAT SPACING WILL BE CORRECTED AND NEW SEAT PADS WILL BE INSTALLED AT NO COST TO OWNERS.

Notes

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VAN SCHOOL BUSES.SYSTEM: INTERIOR; SEAT BACKS AND SEAT FRAMES.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, THE IMPACT FORCE OF THEPASSENGER"S HEAD AGAINST THE SEAT BACK CUSHION WOULD NOT BE SPREAD OVER A WIDEENOUGH AREA. INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN SEATS COULD ALSO RESULT IN LEGINJURY AND DIFFICULTY IN EXITING THE VEHICLE IF SEAT FRAMES ARE BENT BACK.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
