The defect
THE PUSHROD MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY MOUNTED TO THE LOWER OF TWO HOLES IN THE BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY. INCORRECT MOUNTING CAN CAUSE SIDELOAD FORCES TO BE APPLIED TO THE PUSHROD, CAUSING THE PUSHROD TO FRACTURE.
The remedy
VEHICLE WILL BE INSPECTED FOR CORRECT (UPPER HOLE) PUSHROD MOUNTING. MISMOUNTED PUSHRODS WILL BE REPLACED AND CORRECTLY MOUNTED. THE LOWER HOLE WILL BE BLOCKED TO PREVENT FUTURE MISTAKES, WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.
Notes
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRUCKS AND SCHOOL BUSES.SYSTEM: SERVICE BRAKES; PUSHROD.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: CONTINUED USE COULD CAUSE THE FRACTURE TO PROPAGATE ANDTHE PUSHROD TO SEPARATE. THIS WOULD PREVENT THE MASTER CYLINDER FROMACTIVATING, RESULTING IN LOSS OF BRAKING CAPABILITY AND, POSSIBLY, LOSS OFVEHICLE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
