NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

STEERING COLUMN BOOT ATTACHED TO EXTERIOR OF FIREWALL COULD BE DEFORMED BY THE SOUND INSULATION PLACED ON THE FIREWALL AND CAUSES INTERFERENCE WITH THE STEERING SHAFT U-JOINT BOLT. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: AN IMPROPERLY FITTED OR DEFORMED BOOT COULD GET CAUGHT ON BOLT WHICH RETAINS THE STEERING U-JOINT AND RESULT IN SUDDEN HARD STEERING, POSSIBLE LOSS OF CONTROL AND A POTENTIAL CRASH.

The remedy

MODIFY CAB FRONT PANEL SOUND PROOFING AND CHANGE POSITION OF STEERING COLUMN BOOT.

Notes

SYSTEM: STEERING COLUMN BOOT. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS, MIDLINERS P/T MODELS, CLASS 6 AND 7.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
