The defect
THE BRACKETS USED TO RESTRAIN THE "REFERENCE-ZERO" ARM OF THE DRIVE AXLE SLACK ADJUSTERS MAY FLEX EXCESSIVELY, AND PREVENT SELF ADJUSTMENT OF THE SLACK ADJUSTERS. THIS COULD DEGRADE BRAKE EFFICIENCY AS THE BRAKE SHOES WEAR.
The risk
DECREASED BRAKE EFFICIENCY COULD CAUSE INCREASED STOPPINGDISTANCES, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
The remedy
A RETROFIT KIT IS TO BE INSTALLED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WITH THE ATTACHMENT BRACKETS.
Notes
SYSTEM: BRAKES.VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: BUSES FITTED WITH HALDEX AUTOMATIC SLACK ADJUSTERS.WARNING: ALL AFFECTED COACHES MUST BE INSPECTED IMMEDIATELY AND ADJUSTED IFNECESSARY. INSPECTION AND, IF NECESSARY, ADJUSTMENT MUST BE PERFORMED EVERY6000 MILES UNTIL THE RETROFIT KIT IS INSTALLED.
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
