The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: "PUP" TRAILERS, MODELS D2166 AND D2168, EQUIPPED WITH A FIXED TURNTABLE DOLLY WITH A TONGUE THAT WILL ATTACH TO A PINTLE HITCH ON THE LEAD UNIT. THE CAP SCREWS THAT ATTACH THE TURNTABLE TO THE SUSPENSION FRAME CAN BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRAILER.

The risk

FAILURE OF THE FASTENED CONNECTION WHILE THE TRAILER IS IN USE COULD RESULT IN VEHICLE CRASH, DAMAGE TO THE TRAILER, AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE OR PERSONAL INJURY.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CAP SCREWS ON THESE TRAILERS.

Notes

OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 1999. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TIMPTE AT 1-800-654-0636. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
