The defect
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH STEERING COLUMNS SUPPLIED BY DOUGLAS AUTOTEC. THE STEERING COLUMNS ON THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE A DEFECTIVE OR DISLOCATED WELD.
The risk
IF THE STEERING COLUMN BROKE, A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL COULD OCCUR, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LOWER STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY.

OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 12, 1999. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NAVISTAR AT 1-800-448-7825.ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
