The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. THE SPRING IN THE CAM CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER CAN BREAK ALLOWING THE CAM CHAIN TO JUMP TO THE WRONG POSITION ON THE CAM SHAFT SPROCKETS. IF THE CHAIN JUMPS TO THE WRONG POSITION, SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE COULD OCCUR CAUSING SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE.

The risk

SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE COULD CAUSE THE REAR WHEEL TO LOCKUP, DISTURBING THE RIDER'S ABILITY TO CONTROL THE MOTORCYCLE.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ORIGINAL CAM CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER WITH A REVISED CAM CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER.

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
