2000 Safari Coach Trek Owner Complaints

Reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers, shown in full

Data refreshed

Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 SAFARI TREK DIESEL. IN 2005, WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE CONTACT SMELLED A STRONG RUBBER-LIKE ODOR BURNING FROM HIS TIRES. HE ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, BUT THEY FAILED. THE BRAKES WERE REPAIRED AT THE COST OF $2,800. IN FEBRUARY OF 2008, THE SMELL AND FAILURE RECURRED. HE NOTICED THAT THE TIRES WERE EXTREMELY HOT DURING BOTH INSTANCES. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 02V278000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS). THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 29,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 18,000. UPDATED 05/05/08. *LJ UPDATED 05/05/08 *JB

THE CONSUMER STATED THE MOTOR HOME HAS A HARNESS THAT WAS FASTENED AND HELD TOGETHER BY PLASTIC. IN EXTREME HEAT THE PLASTIC MOUNTS MELTED AND CAUSED A SHORT CAUSING THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS TO FAIL. THE BATTERIES BURNED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO OPERATE ON THE CHASSIS BATTERY. THE OTHER BATTERY EXPLODED. VEHICLE IS NOW AT THE R.V. CENTER. *JB THE RED POSITIVE CABLE CONNECTING THE BATTERIES TO THE ALTERNATOR, GENERATOR, CHARGERS AND ISOLATOR WAS INSTALLED TOO LONG BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE EXCESS CABLE WAS SOMEHOW TUCKED UNDER THE FRAME BUT MADE IT'S WAY LOOSE AND FELL ON TOP OF THE EXHAUST PIPE AND MUFFLER. THE HEAT FROM THE PIPE AND MUFFLER MELTED THE HARNESS AND BURNED THROUGH THE CABLE CAUSING A SHORT AND LOSS OF ALL ELECTRICAL POWER. *NM
