2006 Scion Xb Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Scion Xb, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

When braking, the accelerator had somehow stuck and moved me ahead instead of stopping and caused an accident; running into concrete posts in the parking lot, which by USAA standards, totaled my car; Actually it didn't, but because they didn't want to repair it the settlement totaled it, causing me lots of issues in finding transportation. This was not the first time. It has happened three times with this car. I never went back to the dealer (too far to find out if there was a fix for it, or a recall.) In searching for one, never found it.

changed from outside lane to inside lane, when I tried to turn right to stay in the middle lane the steering wheel locked sending me into the left hand turn lane and then into a car that was in the next lane, hitting their left rear tire. I told the insurance adjuster about the issue, he told me they would have the car checked, but I don't think he or my insurance company had the car issue inspected or investigated. The accident seemed minor, but the other party is claiming bodily injury. Maybe you guys can see who has the car and get it checked. I have tried asking the Auction company who bought the car, but they would not release that information to me.

NHTSA ID 11739470 · filed May 22, 2026

Was changing lanes from the outside lane to middle lane, when I tried to turn the steering wheel to the right it locked and the car continued straight, crossing the left hand turn lane and it collided with another vehicle in the next lane. After the car came to a stop I again tried turning the steering wheel both Left and right and it wouldn't move. After the car was turned off and restarted the steering wheel would turn left of right. I believe the mechanism that connects from the ignition to the steering wheel must have released while I was driving - locking the steering wheel preventing me from turning the car and avoiding the accident. I asked the insurance adjuster to have the car checked for this issue and he said they would, but I think they ignored me and now the car has been actioned of last July. When I asked the auction company who bought it and told them about the issue, they refused to tell me any information about it. If you can. Please have the car checked and email me what you find.

ACCELERATED (TOOK OFF) WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (5 INCIDENCES)...ORIGINALLY I THOUGHT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH MY AFTERMARKET CRUISE CONTROL. I CALLED DEALERSHIP AND REPORTED THAT THEY SHOULD NOT RECOMMEND AFTERMARKET CRUISE AT THE TIME...THEY CLAIMED NO OTHER PROBLEMS. AFTER 2ND INCIDENCE CRUISE CONTROL WAS REPLACED BY INSTALLER AND HE CALLED THE COMPANY...NONE WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM ON MY CRUISE MODULE (HE SHOWED ME HOW TO DISCONNECT CRUISE UNDER THE HOOD SINCE CURRENT STILL RUNS THROUGH MECHANISM SINCE CRUISE WAS IN OFF POSITION DURING 2ND INCIDENT)...THE PROBLEM THEN HAPPENED AGAIN (3 TIMES IN SAME DAY ON WAY TO AIRPORT)WITH NEW CRUISE MECHANISM. NO PROBLEMS IN LAST 2 YEARS, BUT IT'S A DAILY GAMBLE...NOW I HAVE TO WONDER IF THE CRUISE WAS EVER EVEN PART OF THE EQUATION IN THE PROBLEM WITH ALL THE ACCELERATOR AND OTHER PROBLEMS I'VE READ ONLINE. I CHECKED WITH THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN THIS YEAR AND THEY DENY ANY PROBLEM WITH SCION ACCELERATORS OR BRAKE NOT DEPRESSING (IT ALWAYS FELT LIKE MY BRAKE AND GAS WERE FIGHTING LIKE IF YOU 2 FOOTED IN A MANUAL EQUALLY, BUT I OWN A AUTOMATIC...IT'S VERY SCARY). *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA SCION XB. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 TO 50 MPH, THE HEADLIGHTS DIMMED AND VISIBILITY WAS REDUCED. THE LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE AGAIN MOMENTS LATER. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH UPHILL, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 60 MPH. THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, BUT WOULD NOT FUNCTION UNLESS THEY WERE ENGAGED AT A RAPID PACE. OCCASIONALLY THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF, THE FRONT END SHAKES WHILE DRIVING 20-50 MPH, AND THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH FAILED TO ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO BURN AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF FUEL AFTER THE OIL WAS CHANGED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE RADIO FAILED AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE IT WHEN THE PARTS ARRIVE. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE BACK OF THE BUMPER WAS SPLIT, WHICH CAUSED IT TO FALL OFF OF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ALSO OFFERED HER $14,000 FOR THE VEHICLE ONLY IF SHE PAID THEM $5,000. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURES WERE ELECTRICAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 400 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,000. UPDATED 02-14-08. *KB

SOMETIMES WHEN I NEED QUICK RESPONSE POWER FROM THE ENGINE IT DOESN'T NOT HAVE POWER TO ACCELERATE. I HAVE TO STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR A FEW LESS THAN FULL AND THE VEHICLE RUN LIKE A TURTLE AND AFTER 4000 RPM THE POWER START TO COME. THIS IS A PROBLEM AT INTERSECTIONS, TRAFFIC LIGHTS WHEN I REALLY ARE A LOW SPEED CAR AT TRAFFIC WHEN START TO RUN. ALSO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CHANGE UP TO OVERDRIVE AT 35 MPH TOO QUICK GETTING WORST THE ACCELERATION WHEN YOU ARE NORMAL DRIVING. IS NOT "CHECK ENGINE" INDICATION BUT ONE AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC AFTER HE DRIVE SAYS THAN THE ENGINE HAVE A BOG PROBLEM TOO LEAN FUEL MIXTURE. WHEN HE TURN OFF THE A/C THE PROBLEM IS LESS HE SAYS IS BECAUSE THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE DON'T BY PASS AIR AT THROTTLE AND IT'S LESS AIR GETTING AT THE ENGINE WITHOUT TPS REGISTRATION. *JB
