The defect: Spartan ERV (Spartan) is recalling certain model year 2005-2012 Star Series emergency vehicles manufactured February 1, 2007, through May 31, 2013 and equipped with a hydraulic ladder rack. The pins which hold the ladder in place may back out over time.
The risk: If the pins back out the ladder and ladder rack arm assembly may collapse, increasing the risk of personal injury.
The remedy: Spartan will notify owners, and will install spacers and locking nuts to prevent the pins from backing out, free of charge. The recall began on September 25, 2013. Owners may contact Spartan ERV at 1-800-867-6478, Option 2.

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
