Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Starcraft RV (Starcraft) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Autumn Ridge, and Solstice fifth wheel trailers manufactured August 12, 2014, to October 16, 2015, and equipped with a side vented sewer drainage system termination valve. The affected vehicles may be missing a caution label to inform the operator not to leave the drain valve open to prevent an escape of sewer gas.
The risk: If the drain valve is left open, sewer gas may fill the recreational vehicle, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
The remedy: Starcraft will notify owners, and send them the missing label, free of charge. The recall began on January 13, 2016. Owners may contact Starcraft customer service at 1-800-945-4787. Starcraft's number for this recall is 9902274.

ON 14 AUG 2015, WHILE TRAVELING SOUTH ON CA14 THE FIRST BLOW-OUT OCCURRED WHEN WE HAD OWNED THE TRAILER 9 MONTHS, USED IT 3 TIMES AND ONLY PUT 3,922 MILES ON THE TRAILER. LUCKILY, NO DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE TRAILER. SUBSEQUENT TO THAT, ON 11 OCT 2015, WE STARTED ON A SHORT 5-DAY VACATION WHEN A SECOND TIRE BLEW WHILE TRAVELING SOUTH ON I215, WITH 4,253 MILES TRAVELED ON THE TRAILER. THE SECOND TIRE HAD THE SAME MARKINGS AS THE FIRST, TOW MAX STR POWER KING ST 235/80R16, TIRE: DOT 8385 GPB, MANUFACTURED IN 4213. BOTH BLOW-OUTS WERE ON THE STREET SIDE TIRES, THE FIRST TIRE THE REAR AND THE SECOND TIRE WAS THE FRONT. THE TIRE PRESSURE OF EACH TIRE WAS CHECKED AFTER REPLACING THE 2ND BLOWN-OUT TIRE AND MEASURED 82 PSI FOR EACH TIRE. FIVE HOURS EARLIER, I HAD MADE SURE THE TIRE PRESSURE ON EACH ON-AXEL TIRE AND THE SPARE MEASURED 80 PSI. AT THE TIME OF THE BLOW-OUT, WE HAD TRAVELED 145 MILES WITH THE TEMPERATURE RISING ABOUT 20 DEGREES TO NEAR 100 DEGREES. ON THE RETURN TRIP, AS USUAL, AT THE START I INSPECTED THE TIRES AND ENSURED THE TRAILER TIRES WERE PROPERLY INFLATED TO 80 PSI. AT A FUEL STOP ON US395 JUST OFF I15, 133 MILES INTO THE TRIP HOME, BEING VERY CAUTIOUS ABOUT THE TIRES, I FOUND THE REAR CURBSIDE TRAILER TIRE'S TREAD WAS CROWNING. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS TIRE AND THE TWO THAT HAD BLOW-OUTS WAS THE MANUFACTURER'S DATE WAS 4313.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
