2001 Strick Van Recalls

Safety recall campaigns filed with NHTSA that cover this model year

Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not to every vehicle of a model year. Check your VIN with NHTSA or your manufacturer's dealer to confirm whether a recall affects your vehicle.

Recall campaignsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS/STUDS

Aug 12, 2002
1,970 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN DRY FREIGHT VANS EQUIPPED WITH STEMCO PRO-TORQ AXLE NUT SYSTEM, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WHEELS CAN SEPARATE DUE TO IMPROPER INSTALLATION OR FAILURE OF THE LOCK RING PROVIDED WITH THE PRO-TORQ AXLE NUT SYSTEM.
The risk: WHEELS SEPARATING FROM THE VEHICLE INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: OWNERS/DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WHEELS. IF SNAP LOCK RING IS INSTALLED WRONG, IT WILL BE REMOVED AND RE-INSTALLED CORRECTLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 18, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT STRICK AT 1-260-692-6121.

What a recall is

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Safety investigations

NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect, and it is not a recall.

STRICK SEMI TRAILER HUB FAILURES

Opened Jun 30, 2003
Closed Nov 12, 2003

ODI OPENED THIS INVESTIGATION BASED ON A FLEET COMPLAINT WHERE INFORMATION WAS FURNISHED INDICATING THAT WHEEL BEARINGS WERE FAILING AT AN UNUSUALLY HIGH RATE.IN 29 CASES THESE FAILURES ALLEGEDLY RESULTED IN A WHEEL END FIRE OR A WHEEL SEPARATION.DURING THE INVESTIGATION IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SUBJECT VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH LOW MAINTENANCE WHEEL ENDS.DOCUMENTS OBTAINED BY ODI INDICATE THAT WIDESPREAD CONFUSION EXISTED IN THIS INDUSTRY CONCERNING MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS.THE ISSUES WERE:FREQUENCY OF MAINTENANCE, AMOUNT OF GREASE TO BE USED, AND PROPER METHOD OF INSPECTION.SEVERAL MEETINGS WERE HELD INVOLVING THE AXLE MANUFACTURER, (ARVINMERITOR), LUBRICATION MANUFACTURER (MOBIL), SEVERAL TRAILER MANUFACTURERS AND FLEETS.CURRENTLY ODI HAS DATA WHICH INDICATES THAT 255 TRAILERS FROM A CERTAIN BUILD PERIOD HAVE WHEEL ENDS FAILING AT A HIGHER RATE THAN PEER TRAILERS WITH THE SAME WHEEL ENDS.ODI IS UPGRADING THIS INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE WHY THE ONE GROUP IS FAILING AT A HIGHER RATE THAN OTHERS WITH THE SAME WHEEL ENDS.IN ORDER TO RESOLVE THIS MATTER, ODI WILL BE CONTACTING THE AXLE MANUFACTURER, THE BEARING AND GREASE MANUFACTURERS, FLEETS AND WILL FURTHER INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE WITH STRICK DIRECTLY.
