2001 Sundowner Stock Owner Complaints

Reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers, shown in full

Data refreshed

Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

I AM REPORTING THAT SUNDOWNER HORSE TRAILERS HAVE A REALLY BIG PROBLEM WITH THERE HORSE TRAILERS. THE FRAMES ARE ROTTING OFF FROM THEM, DUE TO THEM NOT PROPERLY PAINTING THE STEEL CORRECTLY, THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS FOR YEARS AND FAILED TO CONTACT ANY OF THERE CUSTOMERS. ALSO THE FLOORS ARE ROTTING OFF THE TRAILERS DUE TO THEM PUTTING A SPRAY BED LINER ON TOP OF THE ALUMINUM FLOOR AND IT DID NOT SEAL SO MOISTURE AND WETNESS IS GETTING IN BETWEEN THE FLOOR AND THE SPRAY ON BED LINER, AND IT IS ROTTING OUT. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS RIGHT AWAY, PEOPLE AND ANIMALS ARE GETTING HURT BECAUSE SUNDOWNER WON'T RECALL THERE TRAILERS, AND REPLACE THE FRAMES AND FLOORS ON THESE TRAILERS, IF NOTHING CONTINUES TO BE DOWN ABOUT THIS, OTHER ISSUES WILL CONTINUE TO RISE FROM THIS ISSUE. *TR

I OWN FOR PRIVATE USE, A 9 YEAR OLD (2001) SUNDOWNER 3 HORSE GOOSENECK TRAILER THAT THE WHOLE STEEL UNDERCARRIAGE HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT THAT THE TRAILER IS UNSAFE TO USE FOR HAULING LARGE ANIMALS. SUNDOWNER NEVER NOTIFIED IT'S CUSTOMERS OF THE PROBLEM WITH THEIR TRAILERS. WHICH THEY APPARENTLY HAVE KNOWN FOR SOME TIME THAT THEIR TRAILERS MANUFACTURED FROM 1999 - 2005 HAD STEEL USED IN THEM THAT DETERIORATED QUICKLY. WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO LEARN VIA WORD OF MOUTH, AND HAD OUR TRAILER INSPECTED BY A DEALER BEFORE A TRAGIC ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON THE ROAD. THE ESTIMATE TO TOTALLY REPLACE THE STEEL UNDERCARRIAGE AND INSTALL A NEW FLOOR IS APROX $7,500. TO MY UNDERSTANDING THEY ARE NOT RECALLING OR WARRANTING THESE TRAILERS. I HAVE LOST 99% OF THE VALUE ON THIS TRAILER. I CAN NOT TRADE IT. THEREFORE, I MUST REPAIR IT. THESE TRAILERS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY. THEY WERE SOLD ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THEY WOULD LAST. CERTAINLY MORE THAN THEIR ADVERTISED 8 YEAR WARRANTY. SOUNDS LIKE TOYOTA AND SUNDOWNER USED THE SAME STEEL. *TR

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
