2014 Thor Motor Coach Hurricane Owner Complaints

Reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers, shown in full

Data refreshed

Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

See answers to questions below. This is not a unique issue and it has been reported by many other owners. The issue is caused by wind causing overtravel and binding in an improperly engineered wiper system on this model/era RV. I had to make sure to plan my drive home so that I didn't have to go through any weather. Video of the actual issue while it was happening is at https://photos.app.goo.gl/Gwvm94bvVLhZVbnZ9 Q. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? A. Windshield wipers. Yes it is still in a failed state. Q. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? A. I was driving my family of 4 and dog during a heavy rain storm on a dark road with no opportunity for RV services for hundreds of miles around. The wipers failed while driving and I had nearly zero options. I had to continue with no wipers for approx 40 miles until I could find a place to stop (I had to park illegally) to wait out the storm. Q. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? A. No. I haven't taken it for service, but I did contact Thor and they said it wasn't covered under warranty and the repair is at my expense. Q. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? A. No Q. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? A. No

RECALL 17V-162. THIS RECALL ONLY TIGHTENS FASTENERS ON WIPER ASSY. IT DOES NO ADDITIONAL REPAIRS. MY WIPERS BLADES FELL APART WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY RAIN ON INTERSTATE 90. DEALER WOULD ONLY REPLACE ENTIRE WIPER ASSEMBLY FOR $500+. THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE INDIVIDUAL PARTS OR SELL ME INDIVIDUAL PARTS. THERE WAS A BROKEN PART CALLED A CRANK ARM. I HAD THE BROKEN PART WELDED AND REASSEMBLED THE SYSTEM. THE WIPER TIMING STILL DOES NOT WORK RIGHT IN HEAVY RAIN AND WIND. THE RECALL IS WORTHLESS.
