Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Toyota Corolla, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving at highway speeds, the vehicle suffered a sudden, simultaneous failure of multiple electrical and safety systems. Without warning, the Check Engine light, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) light, Traction Control light, and SRS Airbag light all illuminated simultaneously on the dashboard. Immediately upon illumination of these fault lights, the vehicle lost computer-assisted stability control, began swerving violently, spun out of control, and collided with another vehicle, suffering severe front and rear impact damage. The vehicle was declared a total loss. Despite severe impact forces to both the front and rear structure, the SRS airbags completely failed to deploy. Both occupants sustained injuries due to the impact and lack of airbag protection. The simultaneous illumination of the airbag and VSC lights prior to impact strongly points to a sudden failure of the steering column spiral cable (clock spring) assembly—a known safety defect under NHTSA Recall Campaign 14V-168 (Recall E0M). The illumination of the airbag fault light appears to have deactivated the SRS system prior to impact, leaving occupants unprotected during a major collision. The vehicle is currently held at IAA San Diego and contains unread Event Data Recorder (EDR) crash data proving the pre-impact system shutdown. I request that NHTSA review this safety system failure and airbag non-deployment. CHP Crash Report #[9645-2026-02967] and Insurance Total Loss Evaluation are available upon request.
On XXX we have went to we buy any car.com in the car was inspected as a structural damage and it was found that there was no airbags at all so five years ago we have bought the car from John’s. great cars we didn’t know about this. They didn’t tell us that there was no bags. Technically they’re not supposed to sell a car without airbags cause that’s a safety issue now My Daughter had an accident with this car and the airbags never deployed so that’s what happened. The car never had airbags so at this point this is a safety issue and it’s urgent.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.

WHEN NEEDING TO ACCELERATE THE CAR TAKES OFF LIKE A JET ROCKET WHEN THE PEDAL IS PRESSED. THE CAR SEEMS TO BE OUT OF CONTROL AND SHAKING VIOLENTLY. THIS HAPPENS USUALLY ON HIGHWAY WHEN GOING ABOVE 50. FEELS VERY UNSAFE. THIS IS A USED CAR I BOUGHT. THIS HAPPENS ON A REGULAR BASIS.

PAINT ON ROOF AND HOOD FADING AND FLAKING. RED ROOF NOW LOOKS WHITE. *TR
WE BELIEVE SOMETHING PUNCTURED THE FRONT LEFT WHEEL OF THE CAR WHEN DRIVEN DOWN A STREET AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WHEN RELEASED DID NOT STOP THE CAR. THE CAR SKID INTO PARKED CARS AND AIR BAG WAS NOT DEFLATED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SERVICED UNDER THE AIRBAG RECALL. PASSENGER SIDEVIEW MIRROR, RIGHT BODY OF CAR IS DAMAGED, SIDE AND PORTION OF FRONT AND BACK BUMPERS BECAME DAMAGED. NO OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES MADE. THE DAMAGED CAR SITS IN OUR DRIVEWAY SOON TO BE TOWED AND SOLD FOR PARTS.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
I simply was driving on the freeway in the slow lane about to get off my exit and my passenger window exploded, glass went everywhere.
The windshield wipers stop mid cycle. At anytime while driving. If I wiggle them they will resume function. In heavy rain losing wipers and visibility is a huge safety issue. Sometimes they won’t even work when I turn them on and then they will all of a sudden turn on.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
My check ingine light came on. I had noticed the slippery when wet light came on and the vcs light also came on. Since the Catalytic Converter seemed to be the problem. The gentleman at AutoZone diagnosed the car and told me about Catalytic clean. I used that and the lights went off. I believe I was sold a crappy car. The dealership did nothing to replace or look at it. I had not even put 2000 miles on the car since purchased.

2010 TOYOTA COROLLA. CONSUMER STATES SEVERAL CONCERNS REGARDING THIS VEHICLE *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED AT TIMES WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE LIGHTLY, THEY GRAB ABRUPTLY. AT TIMES, WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, HE HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE AMOUNT ACCELERATION DELIVERED TO THE VEHICLE. THE SPEED WOULD INCREASE MORE THAN DESIRED. AT SPEEDS ABOVE 35 MPH, WHEN IN OVERDRIVE, THE ENGINE SPEED WOULD SUDDENLY DROP. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 109,737.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
TAKATA RECALL HELLO, MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR 9 MONTHS. THAT MEANS NEARLY AN ENTIRE YEAR OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SAFELY TRANSPORT PASSENGERS. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A MASS SCALE ISSUE THAT IS CHALLENGING TO SOLVE, BUT IT'S ALSO RIDICULOUS FOR ME TO SPEND SO MUCH MONEY ON A CAR, ONLY TO LOSE BASICALLY 25% OF THE SEAT SPACE I PAY FOR. IT'S CAUSED MUCH DIFFICULTY TRANSPORTING MY FAMILY, BECAUSE I'M DEFINITELY NOT ALLOWING ANYONE TO SIT IN A SEAT THAT MIGHT KILL THEM. I EXPECTED A LONG WAIT FOR THIS TO RESOLVE, BUT TAKING NEARLY A YEAR IS BORDERING ON UNACCEPTABLE. WHEN CAN I EXPECT TOYOTA TO GET ON THE BALL? THANKS
STATIONARY/PARKED DRIVER'S SEAT - AN INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF THE SEAT HAS BROKEN, ALLOWING A SHARP, RIGID STEEL PIECE TO PROTRUDE FROM THE BACK OF THE SEAT INTO THE PASSENGER AREA. THIS PIECE OF STEEL HAS CUT TWO OF OUR CHILDREN ON THE LEGS AS THEY WERE EXITING THE VEHICLE. (ONE INJURY OCCURRED IN JUNE 2016, TOYOTA NOTIFIED OF PROBLEM IN JULY 2016. SECOND INJURY OCCURRED ON 11/11/2016. TOYOTA AGAIN NOTIFIED.)
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
THERE WAS NO WRECK, MY HORN DOES NOT WORK DASH LIGHTS STAY ON LIGHTER ACTS LIKE THERE'S A SHORT AND THE ELECTRICAL IN CONSOLE DOESN'T WORK. *TR
DROVE INTO A GAS STATION TO BUY GAS, PUT CAR IN PARK, STEPPED OUT TO PUMP CASE, NOTICED CAR MOVING, JUMP IN TO STOP IT, CAR ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO BUILDING, CAUSING DAMAGE TO BOTH CAR AND BUILDING. *TR
Too few reports in this category for a page of its own — they appear in the full complaint list.
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
