The defect: SOLDERED TERMINALS OF THE CRUISE CONTROL COMPUTER MAY DEVELOP CRACKS DUE TO IMPROPER APPLICATION OF THE COATING TO THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: CONTINUED USE OF CRUISE CONTROL COULD LEAD TO COMPLETE SEPARATION OF SOLDERED TERMINALS AND CIRCUIT FAILURE; ENGINE SPEED WOULD INSTANTLY RACE AND VEHICLE COULD SUDDENLY ACCELERATE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: REPLACE CRUISE CONTROL COMPUTER, IF NECESSARY.

SUMMARY:TOYOTA RECALLED APPROXIMATELY 5,000 1982 CRESSIDA, CELICA, ANDSUPRA MODELS TO REPLACE POTENTIALLY DEFECTIVE CRUISE CONTROL COMPUTERSIN SEPTEMBER 1986. THEY REPORT THAT NO OTHER DEFECT OR PROBLEM HAS BEENFOUND THAT WOULD CAUSE SUDDEN ACCELERATION.ANALYSIS:THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES MAY HAVEPROBLEMS OTHER THAN THE DEFECT FOR WHICH TOYOTA RECALLED. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN FOR REGULAR SERVICE, AND FOUND THAT THE UPPER SUPPORT BRACKETS ON THE FRONT STRUTS CRACKED. *AK. ALSO, REPLACED EGR VALVE AND REMOVED INTAKE MANIFOLD AND CLEANED IT. *AK. PROBLEM IDENTIFIED BY LEXUS, TOYOTA- MEDIA MOTORS, SERVICE AND REPAIR SHOP IN BURBANK, CA 91502. PHONE 818-842-57577. MEDIA MOTORS IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS UPPER FRONT STRUT SUPPORTS, (RUBBER AND METAL) THAT RUBBER WAS SEVERLY CRACKED, AND THAT A FAILURE OF THIS PART COULD CAUSE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND THAT THE WHEEL WOULD TILT OVER, LEFT TO RIGHT, AND SIDE OF WHEEL WOULD SLIDE ON PAVEMENT. *AK
