What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Toyota Prius V, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
In 2024, I had my vehicle checked out prior to a road trip because the brakes were making "fart noises," and I was worried about driving it to Albuquerque. The AAA certified dealer I took the car to said everything checked out alright. I never received the letter regarding the brake system issue, so I could not take advantage of the extended warranty repair program. My car was in the 80-90 thousand mile range and had not yet rolled over. Fast forward to 2025, my dashboard lit up all over the place, and I got the brakes checked again. By that time, the fault code was coming up, but the entire ABS system needed to be replaced. I was unable to get any help from TOYOTA despite this being a KNOWN FAULT WITH TOYOTA PRIUS AND TOYOTA PRIUS V FROM THIS TIME PERIOD. They are STILL not doing anything to help their customers. Brake issues are EXTREMELY dangerous, and it is wildly negligent to continue moving forward WITHOUT fully recalling the ABS system in the FULL LINE of prius vehicles from the impacted manufacture dates. Every prius owner I know has had to deal with this. My care was UNDER the required mileage but PAST the dates to be repaired. PLEASE consider holding TOYOTA responsible and getting them to refund Prius owners who have already paid for this COSTLY repair out of pocket. Thank you.

8/2025 Car stalled on freeway. Went to dealer. They said nothing wrong. Then on a trip north, car stalled again on freeway. Went to the nearest dealer. They too said nothing wrong. This time same thing. There is a recall for the exact symptoms of the exact car yet they say the repair was done. Why does my vin not qualify for the exact symptoms that generated a recall? This was super dangerous at freeway speed. Toyota knows there is a problem with the inverter and it's computer. Now I'm paying again for a diagnosis. That makes $750 just diagnosing and now if they actually decide it is the inverter, I have to pay upwards of $3000 even though there is a recall? What the heck?

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I purchased a 2014 Toyota Prius V in 2013, and it currently has 120,000 miles on it. Last month, the engine light came on, so I took it to a dealership. They diagnosed the issue and provided the codes P0302 and P0304. After consulting multiple shops, all confirmed that coolant is leaking into the engine, which means I either need to repair the head gasket or replace the engine entirely. The quotes I've received for this repair range from $5,000 to $15,000, while the current value of the car is only about $5,000. I want to file a complaint regarding Toyota's responsibility for these engine issues. We buy cars because we trust the brand, and in this case, Toyota has broken that trust. Despite maintaining the car according to Toyota's recommended schedule, I have encountered this serious problem.
The car began to jerk, made knocking noises, miss fires on cylinder 1, 2 and 4, coolant leakages, oil leakages, compression issues and the check engine light keeps turning on and off. My safety has been put into play because, the car would jerk many of times as it would want to stop as I was driving. I would then have to pull over and call for assistance. Per the Toyota service advisor he recommended that I needed a new rebuilt engine kit. The extended warranty company stated that I was negligent with my car and denied my claim and refused to pay for the 10 grand motor and I had to tow my car to another shop. However, the car at this time is still experiencing the same malfunctions. The warning lamps are still showing at this present time and prior to the failure of problem. This car meets the "Lemon law guidelines, However, I have been informed otherwise that I don't meet the criteria for lemon law due it being expired sometime last year in Oct of 2024. As stated this is a lemon car.

Car was diagnosed at a Toyota dealership with a brake booster issue reading code 20TE07 after my vehicles brakes suddenly would not work and the car continued to jolt forward. The brakes wouldn’t stop the car. According to Toyota, my vehicle is three months outside of the warranty period but under the covered mileage so we are left to repair this defect ourselves. This was a very dangerous situation and could have cost us and our children our lives instead of just the $4800 repair cost. This has happened to both of our Prius’s so this is not a rare issue. Toyota needs to have a plan for these parts failing suddenly and they should all be recalled for safety in my opinion. The experience was very scary and we had zero control over the vehicle when the brakes suddenly went out. Where do I join the class action lawsuit?
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.

RATTLE TYPE OF NOISE CAN HEAR AND FEEL FROM DRIVER'S SIDE IN FRONT SUSPENSION AREA WHILE DRIVING LOWER SPEED AND WHEN PUSH BRAKE AND STOP . MOST OF NOISE HAPPENED WHEN PUSH BRAKE TO STOP AND SLOWLY START DRIVING / MOVING VEHICLE AGAIN . THOUGHT NOISE IS FROM SUSPENSION BUT AFTER BEING FULL INSPECTION ON VEHICLE , MECHANICS BELIEVE IT'S NOISE FROM " HYBRID SYSTEM POWER INVERTER " . SEARCH RECALL STATES ON NHSTA WEB AND FOUND RECALL IS " INCOMPLETE " . SO AM PLANING TO BRING IT AND ASK AT TOYOTA DEALER IN CULVER CITY CA WHERE I ORIGINALLY PURCHASED VEHICLE FOR REPAIR / REPLACE INVERTER . IT SUPPOSED TO BE PERFORM AS FREE OF SERVICE .
TOYOTA ISSUED SAFETY RECALLS E0E AND F0R FOR THE FAILURE OF THE HYBRID INVERTER. IF THE INVERTER HAD NOT FAILED YET, THE TOYOTA'S REMEDY IS A 'SOFTWARE RE-FLASH'. THE SOFTWARE REFLASH 'REMEDY' IS NOT SUFFICIENT. THERE HAVE BEEN AN EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF INVERTER FAILURES AFTER THE SOFTWARE RE-FLASH 'REMEDY' FOR THESE RECALLS HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVERS, AS IT LEADS TO UNINTENDED DECELERATION ' THE PRIUS SPONTANEOUSLY ENTERING 'LIMP-HOME MODE' OR EVEN A 'HYBRID SYSTEM SHUT DOWN'. THIS IS DANGEROUS AS IN RESULTS IN DRASTIC REDUCTIONS, IF NOT THE COMPLETE LOSS, OF POWER. THESE UNINTENDED DECELERATION OCCURRENCES PREDOMINANTLY HAPPEN WHILE THE VEHICLES ARE IN MOTION ' MANY TIMES AT HIGH SPEEDS. BETWEEN ONLY TWO DEALERSHIPS, WE HAVE DOCUMENTED APPROXIMATELY 100 INVERTER FAILURES AFTER THE E0E AND F0R SOFTWARE REFLASH 'REMEDY' HAS BEEN COMPLETED. DURING ONE INVERTER FAILURE, WHICH TOOK PLACE AFTER RECEIVING THE E0E SOFTWARE RE-FLASH, EXCESSIVE HEAT WAS GENERATED WITHIN THE INVERTER THAT MELTED STEEL BOLTS AND CREATED AN ELECTRICAL ARC THAT BLASTED TWO HOLES THROUGH THE ALUMINUM CASE OF THE INVERTER ASSEMBLY. THE DRIVER STATED IF SHE HAD EXPERIENCED THIS FAILURE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY, 'SHE WOULDN'T BE HERE ANYMORE.' THE VEHICLE WAS A 2012 MODEL YEAR AND AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE IT HAD ONLY 31,222 MILES ON IT. INSTANCES OF UNINTENDED DECELERATION WILL CONTINUE TO GROW DAILY UNTIL TOYOTA IMPLEMENTS A SUFFICIENT REMEDY THAT WILL PREVENT THESE LOSSES OF POWER FROM OCCURRING. ATTACHED PLEASE FIND A REPORT DETAILING, FOR ONLY TWO DEALERSHIPS, THE INVERTER FAILURES WE'VE EXPERIENCED AFTER THE E0E AND F0R SOFTWARE RE-FLASH REMEDIES HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. ALSO ATTACHED, PLEASE FIND THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE INVERTER WHICH EXPERIENCED THE ELECTRICAL ARC. PLEASE CONSIDER THAT "DATE THIS HAPPENED" AS THE FILING DATE OF THIS REPORT. *JS

My wife opened the tailgate and the right side lift support exploded. A person standing across the parking lot thought it sounded like a gun shot. Small metal pieces flew about the cargo area in the car. When my wife then tried to close the tailgate the lift support bent. She was then able to disconnect it and close the tailgate. I included a picture of the remaining left side support plus the broken right side and where it was mounted.

YOKOHAMA AVID ENVIGOR 215/50/R17 TREAD SEPARATION: REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE DEVELOPED A CRACK ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE. TIRES HAVE 18,000 MILES ON THEM. INSTALLED 12/27/2017. CRACK RESULTED IN AIR LOSS TRIGGERING THE TPMS SYSTEM. DISCOVERED WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREET. REMOVED WHEEL AND INSPECTED VIGOROUSLY BEFORE FINDING SAID CRACK. CONTACTED YOKOHAMA AND GAVE THEM OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT, SENT THEM PICTURE OF CRACK BUT THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, CLAIMING IT'S A ROAD HAZARD DAMAGE. WHEN A TIRE CRACKS, THIS INDICATES WEAK TREAD AND DELAMINATION OF THE TIRE LAYERS (TREAD SEPARATION). SPENT A WEEK COMMUNICATING WITH THEM (YOKOHAMA) TO NO AVAIL. THEY ADAMANTLY REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.

POWER STEERING HARD TO DRIVE, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, ABS, A LITTLE CAR LIGHT , STORING RED LIGHT ,
WAS DRIVING AT APPROX 20MPH ON A SIDE ROAD WHEN THE CAR COMPLETELY LOST POWER AND WENT DEAD. ALL THE DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS LIT UP AT THE SAME TIME. LOST STEERING CONTROL (THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY HEAVY AND WAS UNABLE TO STEER). MANAGED TO COAST TO A STOP A 100 FEET AWAY (SINCE THE CAR HAD ABSOLUTELY NO POWER). TURNED OFF THE POWER BUTTON, TURNED IT BACK ON AND THE CAR STARTED RUNNING AGAIN. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY. THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS, FOUND CODES (LISTED BELOW) WHICH SUGGESTED THAT THE SMART KEY LOST COMMUNICATION WITH THE CAR. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR AN EXTRA DAY, RAN THE DIAGS OVERNIGHT JUST TO SEE IF THEY CAN REPRODUCE BUT, WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. NO IDEA WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THE ISSUE. THE SMART KEY WAS SITTING ON THE CENTER CONSOLE. BELOW ARE THE SMART KEY RELATED CODES THAT WERE RECORDED: U0100 - LOST COMMUNICATION WITH ECM/PCM "A" U0142 - LOST COMMUNICATION WITH BODY CONTROL MODULE "B" U0155 - LOST COMMUNICATION WITH INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) CONTROL MODULE U0293 - LOST COMMUNICATION WITH HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEM PLEASE HELP INVESTIGATE THIS AS THIS IS POTENTIALLY A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. BY GOD'S GRACE, THERE WAS NO OTHER VEHICLE ON THE ROAD, WAS GOING AT A LOW SPEED AND THANK GOD, THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON A HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEED. THANKS.
