2020 Toyota Supra Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2020 Toyota Supra, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

There is currently an ongoing recall for the GR Supra over the starter. I currently drive a 2020 and have had periodic starter malfunctions. This is when I go to start the car it states starter system malfunction then lets me still turn it on after clearing the error message. I have brought this up to my dealership and due to the intermittent nature of the issue they said they could not diagnose and that continuity was good so they would not replace it and if they did it would not be covered. I fear that my car is a fire risk based on the recall notices for all the other model years and that when it happens I will be left holding the bag. The date listed below (7/17/2026) is just the last time it happened. I have had it happen close to 20 times or more it feels like.

The 2020 - 2025 Toyota Supra is manufactured by BMW and uses virtually all components supplied by BMW. The vehicle includes dual climate controls (driver / passenger) and the temperature of the air from the vents is controlled independently. It is known by BMW that the blend door or the actuator (motor) - which regulates how much cold versus hot air is mixed per the control setting - can break or be deformed. This is a manufacturing defect in the heating unit, not a wear issue. No heat is available to the driver either through the center vent, the left vent, and most importantly from a safety standpoint, the vents at the windshield. This means defrosting or defogging the windshield during winter is virtually impossible because only extremely cold air is available on the driver's side. Since it is made by BMW, the Supra is at risk for the same issue. There are several reports on the internet from Supra owners and many, many from BMW owners who identified the problem and even attempted to create stronger replacement parts. On or about July 26, 2021, NHTSA published two safety recall / service bulletins for BMW and Mini for this problem: SI M64 02 21 and SIB 64 06 21. The cost of repair through Toyota or an independent repair shop is purportedly several thousand dollars because the entire interior dash must be removed to access the heating unit to replace the defective part(s). The Toyota Supra should be subject to the same safety recalls and the repairs should be provided by the dealership or authorized repair shop.

I PURCHASED A 2020 TOYOTA SUPRA ON NOVEMBER 11, 2019. ON DECEMBER 2,2019. THIS VEHICLE SERIOUSLY AND VERY DANGEROUSLY MALFUNCTIONED. I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY RESIDENTIAL AREA AFTER STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN, PROCEEDED TO MAKE A LEFT ONTO GREENSPRING AVE. , HEADING TOWARDS THE BELTWAY, AND THIS VEHICLE, INSTEAD OF ALLOWING ME TO TURN LEFT, TOOK OVER AND THE STEERING WENT TO THE RIGHT, TAKING ME UP A CURB AND INTO A TREE. THE CAR LITERALLY TOOK COMPLETE CONTROL WITHOUT ALLOWING ME TO CONTROL THE STEERING. THERE ARE MANY POSSIBLE REASONS THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. IT COULD BE THE A LANE SENSOR FAILURE, STEERING FAILURE, SENSORS FAILURE, SOFTWARE FAILURE, SOFTWARE MISCOMMUNICATION ETC. WHAT'S WORSE IS TOYOTA THEMSELVES ARE SELLING A HIGHLY TECHNICAL VEHICLE, WHICH AFTER DEALING WITH THEM, IT IS MORE THAN OBVIOUS THEY THEMSELVES EVEN SUPPOSEDLY THEIR TOP ENGINEER, HAS HAD ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE WITH THIS VEHICLE OR MUCH LESS A BMW WHICH IS THE ENGINE MAKER IN THIS VEHICLE, HE NEVER WORKED WITH THEM EITHER. THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE WHICH HAS BEEN A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE, TOYOTA COULDN'T EVEN GET THE EDR BOX TO DOWNLOAD ANY DATA. I AM PETRIFIED THAT THIS VEHICLE COULD HAVE HURT OR EVEN KILL SOMEONE OR MYSELF AND TOYOTA HAS BEEN CLEARLY AT A LOSS WITH ANY ANSWERS JUST COMPLETE SNEAKINESS. PLEASE GET THIS VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD UNTIL THIS VEHICLE IS BETTER UNDERSTOOD BY TOYOTA BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. THEIR ARE MANY PARTS ON THE VEHICLE THAT ARE DAMAGED INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WHEEL, TIRE, SUSPENSION, HOOD, SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, PASSENGER SIDE MIRROR ECT.

I am reporting a safety concern involving BMW and Toyota vehicles equipped with the B58 Technical Update (B58TU) engine, commonly found in 2019–2021 models. These engines use a variable displacement oil pump with an internal thermoplastic adjusting component that regulates oil pressure. Field reports show this component can fracture, causing sudden loss or instability of oil pressure—most often during cold starts in low temperatures. When the part fails, oil pressure regulation becomes erratic or disappears entirely, often with little or no useful warning before engine damage or vehicle disablement. Reported early signs include failed electronic oil level readings, abnormal pressure behavior, or sudden drivetrain malfunction messages. Failures can quickly escalate to engine shutdown or severe mechanical damage from oil starvation. A loss of lubrication may disable the vehicle without warning while driving or shortly after startup, creating a safety hazard—especially in winter conditions when failures are most frequent and occupants may be exposed to freezing temperatures. Repairing the issue requires major disassembly, and oil pump replacement alone typically costs $6,000–$8,000 if the engine has not been harmed. Owners cannot reliably determine whether their cars contain the original plastic based pump or a later metal component revision because VIN based parts data now shows updated components even when no replacement occurred, and BMW has removed the original plastic pump part number from dealer systems. Failures have been reported across multiple production years, and the exact population of affected vehicles remains unclear. Because this defect can cause sudden, warning free vehicle disablement—particularly in cold weather—I believe it warrants investigation as a potential safety related issue. One of the main indicators of this issue is the inability to determine oil level, my car has never been able to determine oil level. Thank you.

The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Supra. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle with the Push-to-Start button, the vehicle hesitated while starting. A message that the engine was overheating was displayed. The contact stated that the vehicle was idling in Low Power Mode while at a stoplight, and the vehicle hesitated while accelerating with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle then suddenly jolted forward. The failure was temporarily fixed after shifting to SPORT Mode. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where the starter was replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was towed to a local independent BMW Service Center, and the starter was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 25,000.

The vehicle Parking / Backup / Cross Traffic assist warnings do not work unless the objects are within approx 2 feet of the car. When backing up there is no warning of any on coming traffic or a child behind the car. If a individual is at the rear of the car there is no visible or audible warnings. Only warning is either seeing the individual in the rear window or on the camera. This has been brought to the manufactures attention and they say this is the normal operation. All other cars I have had cross traffic and pedestrian alerts have visual and audible alerts. The car says that it is suppose to have them.

I WAS STOPPED IN THE LEFT TURN LANE AT A RED LIGHT. THE TURN ARROW SWITCHED TO GREEN SO I TOOK THE U-TURN. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE U-TURN GOING ABOUT 15 MPH, WHEN THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. THE CAR OVERSTEERED, AND THE REAR PORTION OF THE CAR KICKED OUT TO THE RIGHT SIDE. I CORRECTED BY COUNTERSTEERING AND REMOVING MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE, CAUSING ME TO OVERSTEER TO THE LEFT SIDE THIS TIME. IN AN EFFORT TO STOP THE CAR, I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES WHILE OVERSTEERING. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO ROTATE COUNTER CLOCKWISE, AND IMPACTED WITH THE CURB AND ENDED UP ON TOP OF THE MEDIAN. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE REAR PASSENGER SUSPENSION AND BODY. TOYOTA PULLED DATA FROM THEIR ELECTRONIC DATA RECORDER, AND CONCLUDED THAT IT THERE WAS NO MALFUNCTION WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL OR BRAKES. I SIMPLY DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS CONCLUSION; NO EFFORTS WERE MADE TO ENSURE THAT THE COMPUTER READING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. IT CAN BE SEEN IN THE DATA CHARTS THAT I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHILE THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING. ADDITIONALLY, IT INDICATES THAT MY SPEED WAS 26 MPH AT THE TIME OF IMPACT WITH A PEAK SPEED OF 36 MPH. IS IT FEASIBLE THAT ALL OF THE CONTROL ARMS, REAR DIFFERENTIAL, AXLE, AND BRAKE ROTORS COULD BE BROKEN AT THAT SPEED? IF YOU LOOK AT THE ATTACHED PICTURES, THE AXLE WAS SHEARED OFF UPON IMPACT AT 26 MPH. THIS DOESN'T ADD UP. *TR

WINDSHIELD CRACKS FROM VERY VERY TINY KNICK, ABOUT THE SIZE OF 1/2 OF A GRAIN OF SALT. I AM IN MULTIPLE TOYOTA SUPRA GROUPS IN FACEBOOK AND NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I FEEL THE WINDSHIELD DOESN'T MEET SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR IMPACTS. THE WINDSHIELDS APPEAR TO LOOK LIKE A SINGLE PANE OF GLASS, NOT LAMINATED DOUBLE PANE.

I scheduled an appointment to get an oil change and recall issue taken care of by a Toyota dealership near me. I dropped it off in the morning and when I called to check up on it in the afternoon they did not even begin to work on the car. I had picked it up because they said they were unable to get to it. Keep in mind they were still working on other cars that were simply pulling in. I had scheduled my appointment a week prior to get this issue taken care of. Now I am putting my safety at risk because they failed to take care of the issue.
