What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 Toyota Tacoma, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
The brakes on my 2008 Toyota Tacoma were failing so I took it to a mechanic, who said that the brake lines had failed and needed to be replaced. However, he said that it wasn't worth putting any money into the truck, as the leaf springs were corroded along with the frame, which could crack apart at any time. As we only purchased the truck one year ago, he advised us to take it to the dealership where we purchased it, and informed us of the recalls on both of these issues. I spoke with the mechanic at the dealership because when we purchased the vehicle, they did the inspection and said that everything was fine. When I asked the mechanic about this, he said that he didn't have anything to do with sales and we needed to speak to the owner (who is out on medical leave). The mechanic said that when the dealership purchased the vehicle at auction, the frame must have been undercoated and so they missed it. When I mentioned the recall, he told me to call Toyota. I have checked the VIN and it is not showing an open recall for this vehicle. However, it is experiencing the exact same safety issues as the recalls for leaf spring corrosion and frame rust and cracking. I have only had this truck for a little over one year and do not know what to do. It is too dangerous to drive as it could cause a serious accident. Neither the dealership nor Toyota want to take responsibility and offer a solution.
Toyota has had a long history of excessive frame rust. This truck has excessive frame rust. There was a recall to fix this frame rust and my truck has not been fixed. Toyota will not fix the current recall for the spring replacement because of the frame rust. My life and my children’s lives are in danger due to the possible leaf suspension failure that may puncture the gas tank.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.

I have major rust on the frame of the truck and I was told by Toyota the warranty period is over. I just gave Toyota the Vin number and was told it was not covered. The rust is major and a safety issue.

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the steering wheel failed to move as intended and the vehicle became difficult to maneuver. An unknown warning light was illuminated. The contact continued driving at a slow speed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the pinion steering gear failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that on a separate occasion while driving 40 MPH, there was an abnormal revving sound coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the engine was leaking oil and the entire braking system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

Odometer Fraud. The contact was previously interested in a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. The contact discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy before the purchase was made, and the vehicle was not purchased. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 114,000. It was later discovered, upon checking with the local DMV, that the mileage was 196,000.
Wire connection on passenger side, under carpet. It is to the heater Temperature Control. The heater only works on High until you hit a bump or move the connector then it will start working until you bump it again. It is available for inspection upon request. A Certified Mechanic told me, It could potentially cause a fire by shorting out. I have two other friends with the same issue on their Toyota Tacoma's. .

WHILE MOVING AT IDLE IN A PARKING LOT, LOOKING FOR SPACE TO PARK, A/C COMPRESSOR TURNED ON. ECU RAISED ENGINE RPMS THE NORMAL 200+- RPMS. IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS, ENGINE WENT TO FULL THROTTLE. STOOD UP ON BRAKE PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET. REAR TIRES WERE SPINNING AND SMOKING. BEGAN TO MOVE FASTER THAN ORIGINALLY. TURNED OFF IGNITION SWITCH, PUT IN PARK. RESTARTED AND NO PROBLEMS SINCE THEN. BELIEVE SOMETHING CONFUSED ECU WHEN RPMS WERE RAISED TO COMPENSATE A/C COMPRESSOR ENGAGING. *TR

Some of the interior door light switches don't light @ night. I can probably take the door panel off & fix it... (buy bulbs)...? Door hinge on the gas cap breaks way to easily. Could fly off & hit someone\thing... Clunking sound coming from the rear end & I can't find where it's coming from... Gas cap gets loose & throws a p0333 code knock sensor bank 1 or 2 or both. Who put them under the manifold... ? Scary to get the code. That's a hr+ job that's doing it myself.$ Expensive from a shop $ Nothing to serious. 2nd Owner. Runs strong for the miles on it. UPON ARRIVAL AT THE LOCAL LAUNDRY MAT I HEARD WHAT ALMOST SOUNDED LIKE A LOW CALIBER GIUN SHOR SECONDS LATER THERE WAS HEAVY BROWN SMOKE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THEN SECONDS AFTER THAT TWO FOOT FLAMES CONSUMED THE FRONT BUMPER. THE FOG LIGHT WIRING HARNESS MELTED AND THE HEAT WAS SO INTENSE IT CAUSED THE BUMPER TO CATCH FIRE. CALLED TOYOTA AND WAS HOPEFUL THEY WOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR NEGLIGENCE. BUT AFTER SENDING AN OVER PAID INVESTIGATOR WHO FLAT OUT LIED ABOUT MODIFICATIONS DONE ON THE TRUCK( WRONG) TOYOTA THEN TRIE TO TELL NE I WAS THE SECOND OWNER ON THE VEHICLE SO THAT ON TOP OF PHANTOM MODS PRECLUDES TOYOTA OF ANY RESPONSIBILITY. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY TOYOTA YOU'VE DONE NOTHING BUT LIE ABOUT THIS INCIDENT THAT COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY BEEN A DEATH TRAP!*DT *AS

BOUGHT MY 08'TOYOTA TACOMA USED 10/21/19. NOT KNOWING ABOUT THE RUST PROBLEM THESE SEEMED TO HAVE. IT HAD 174000 MILES ON IT, AND SO FAR I AM FIRST HAVING TO GET A NEW OIL PAN, (RUST HOLE) IT IS ABOUT A 7+ HOUR JOB BECAUSE THE CROSS MEMBER CAN NOT BE REMOVED . COST WILL BE ABOUT $800.00, WHILE WAITING FOR THAT TO HAPPEN THE REAR AXLE (DIFFERENTIAL) STARTED TO LEAK. ANOTHER RUST HOLE...THE DIFFERENTIAL IS ONE PIECE, NO REMOVABLE COVER. NOW I'M IN FOR A USED ONE AND ADD LABOR IT WILL BE SOME AROUND $1200.00 TO $1500.00 TO FIX...WHAT GIVES, THIS IS WAY OVER THE TOP FOR A 11 YEAR OLD TRUCK! I GOT RID OF MY 2000 FORD RANGER WITH WHEN I BOUGH IT HAD 200,000 MILES ON IT. AT 206,000 WHEN I GOT RID OF IT, NO LEAKS ANYWHERE, THE BODY WAS RUSTED OUT BUT THIS NY. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL PROBLEM LONG AGO AND I ASKING WHY IT WASN'T. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ON MY END TO GET SOME HELP WITH THIS MAJOR COST. I AM 74 YEARS OLD AND ON SS. WHILE OPERATING THIS VEHICLE ON MY PROPERTY IN 4WD THE TRANSFER CASE BECAME STUCK IN 4WD. IT STILL IS STUCK IN 4WD AND WON'T RETURN TO 2WD AS IT SHOULD. I'VE BEEN FORCED TO REMOVE THE FRONT DRIVESHAFT (NO EASY TASK) TO PREVENT UNNECESSARY WEAR AND TEAR ON THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL. AFTER READING NUMEROUS FORUMS RELATING TO THIS SUBJECT I'VE DETERMINED THAT THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THIS MODEL TRANSFER CASE.

FORTH TIME. SAME SITUATION. WHILE CREEPING ALONG IN DRIVE, WITH FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL, A/C COMPRESSOR CLICKED ON, ENGINE RPM'S REVVED SLIGHTLY, THEN THROTTLE WENT FULL FORCE. TIRES STARTED SPINNING; BRAKES WOULD NOT HOLD. HAD TO TURN IGNITION SWITCH OFF. TURN BACK ON AND ALL OK. GOVERNMENT KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH 2002-2011 TOYOTA'S, AND HAVE FINED THEM HEAVILY. THERE NEEDS TO BE A BRAKE OVERRIDE SYSTEM INSTALLED ON ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SO THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN. VERY DANGEROUS. AND IT DID NOT INVOLVE THE FLOOR MAT AS ONE WAS NOT IN VEHICLE.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am reporting a serious safety incident with my 2008 Toyota Tacoma. While driving at approximately 65 mph on the highway last week, my spare tire detached from the vehicle (unknown at that time). The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light activated, and I later discovered the spare had broken free and fallen off. This was unknown until a week later when the dealership said the TPMS went off due to a missing spare tire. The failure was caused by severe corrosion of the spare tire carrier/hoist assembly, which gave way without warning. This created an immediate highway hazard for vehicles behind me. Toyota has previously issued recalls for spare tire carrier corrosion on earlier Sequoia and Tundra models. However, my 2008 model year was not included — yet the exact defect has now occurred. This is not a matter of convenience or maintenance. A spare tire falling off at highway speeds is a life-safety defect that should be investigated by Toyota and NHTSA before someone is seriously injured or killed.
HEAD LIGHT LENS HAVE STRESS CRACKS, HOLD MOISTURE AND ARE NOT CLEAR AND DIMINISHES THE VISIBILITY FOR THE BULB TO WORK PROPERLY AND DRIVER TO BE ABLE TO SEE AT NIGHT. THE LENS ARE NOT CLEAR AND HAVE TURNED TO A YELLOWISH COLOR. THIS STARTED HAPPENING WITHIN TWO YEARS AFTER I PURCHASED THE TRUCK NEW IN 2008 LUG NUTS. TUSCALOOSA TOYOTA TELLS ME OVER A YEAR AGO THAT I HAVE SWOLLEN LUG NUTS. TUSCALOOSA TOYOTA HAS DONE ALL OF MY SERVICE WORK AND THE ONLY ONES THAT HAVE TOUCHED THESE LUG NUTS. THEY HAVE CAUSE THE PROBLEM BY NOT USING THE CORRECT SOCKET BUT THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR REPLACEMENT. THEY SHOULD REPLACE THEM BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE HAS TOUCHED THEM. I AM HAPPY WITH MY TRUCK BUT VERY UNSATISFIED WITH THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP NOT TAKING CARE OF THESE TWO DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT HAS TO DO WITH SAFETY.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAS A 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLES RPM LEVELS INCREASED ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN GEAR. WHEN THE VEHICLE SPEED WAS 70 MPH AND THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO 5TH GEAR, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 95 MPH WITHOUT HIM PRESSING ON THE GAS PEDAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 26,000. UPDATED 03/30/10 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND THE VEHICLE DOESN'T GO BACK TO IDLE IN BETWEEN GEARS; ESPECIALLY BETWEEN 4TH AND 5TH GEAR. AND A SLIGHT TO MODERATE DOWN HILL THE RPM'S DON'T GO TO IDLE. UPDATED 08/18/10
I PREVIOUSLY FILED ODI COMPLAINT 10282779 TO REPORT TO TWO INSTANCES WHERE MY TACOMA ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AT A TIME WHEN I HAD ABOUT 17,000 MI. ON THE VEHICLE. THEREAFTER I TRIED TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROBLEM. THE ONLY THING THAT CHANGED PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF THE SPONTANEOUS ACCELERATION WAS THAT I ACQUIRED A BLACKBERRY CURVE TO REPLACE MY PREVIOUS CELL PHONE. MY OLD CELL PHONE WAS SMALLER, SO WHILE DRIVING I USUALLY KEPT IT IN THE SLOT NEXT TO MY GEAR SHIFTER. MY BLACKBERRY WAS MUCH BIGGER AND DIDN'T FIT IN THE SLOT. THEREFORE I PUT IT IN THE CUP HOLDER UNDERNEATH MY DASHBOARD. IT WAS THEN THAT I STARTED EXPERIENCING THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM. SUBSEQUENTLY, I STARTED CARRYING MY BLACKBERRY EITHER IN MY BACKPACK ON THE PASSENGER SEAT OR IN THE SLOT WHERE I USED TO KEEP MY SMALLER CELL PHONE AND I NO LONGER CHARGE THE BLACKBERRY USING THE CHARGER THAT PLUGS INTO MY LIGHTER SOCKET IN MY DASHBOARD. WITH ONE EXCEPTION (WHICH I SHALL DESCRIBE) THIS HAS SOLVED THE PROBLEM OVER THE 9,000 MI. SINCE IT BEGAN. ON 10/21/2009, I WAS DRIVING MY TACOMA AT A TIME WHEN I NEEDED TO CHARGE MY BLACKBERRY. I PLUGGED MY BLACKBERRY INTO THE CAR CHARGER AND PLACED THE BLACKBERRY IN MY BACKPACK ON THE PASSENGER SEAT. WITHIN 10 MILES MY TACOMA STARTED ACCELERATING UNCONTROLLABLY. I SHIFTED THE TRUCK INTO A LOWER GEAR AND UNPLUGGED MY PHONE FROM THE CHARGER, BUT THE VEHICLE KEPT ACCELERATING. I SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE WHEN IT STARTED TO REDLINE, AND STEERED THE VEHICLE OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER I STOPPED, I SHIFTED INTO PARK AND TURNED THE IGNITION AND THE ENGINE AGAIN STARTED TO REDLINE. I LET IT REST A COUPLE OF MINUTES, AND IT STARTED NORMALLY AND I DROVE OFF. I NO LONGER CHARGE MY BLACKBERRY WITH THE LIGHTER CHARGER AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY SUBSEQUENT PROBLEMS. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT MY BLACKBERRY'S ELECTROMAGNETIC FREQUENCIES INTERFERE WITH MY TACOMA'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WHEN THE PHONE IS EITHER TOO NEAR THE DASH OR PLUGGED INTO THE CAR CHARGER. *TR

I HAVE 98000 MILES ON MY TRUCK, 90% OF IT FREEWAY MILES. EVERY TIME I HAD MADE A ROAD TRIP, THE BACK OF MY NECK WOULD BURN, AND KEEP BURNING FOR WEEKS AFTER I WAS BACK FROM MY TRIPS. TWO WEEKS AGO, AFTER DRIVING 1000 MILES, THE BURNING INCREASED TO EXTREME SHOOTING NERVE NEEDLES FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF MY NECK DOWN BELOW AND ABOVE MY SHOULDER BLADE, DOWN BELOW AND ABOVE MY RIB CAGE IN THE AREA OF MY HEART, AND AROUND THE BACK OF MY SHOULDER, DOWN THROUGH MY ARM PIT, UP THE FRONT OF MY SHOULDER AND INTO MY ROTATOR CUFF. ALL OF THIS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY BODY, AND ALL EMANATING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF MY NECK, ALL THE WHILE THE BACK OF MY NECK WAS STILL BURNING. PLEASE EXCUSE THE LONG SENTENCE. THE PAIN WAS REDUCED BY 500MG OF ASPIRIN AND 500MG OF IBUPROPIN. THE NEXT DAY I HUNTED ROCKS, BENDING AND STRETCHING, AND WORKED MOST OF THE PAIN AWAY BY STRETCHING THE MUSCLES OUT. AS SOON AS I STARTED MY RETURN TRIP, THE PAIN RETURNED, ALL THE SAME AS ABOVE. AS I WAS RUBBING MY NECK I NOTICED THAT MY TRUCK DOES NOT HAVE A SHOULDER STRAP. IT HAS A NECK STRAP, SINCE THE ENTIRE STRAP WAS TIGHT UP AGAINST THE LOWER PART OF MY NECK, JERKING MY NECK EVER TIME THE TRUCK MADE A TURN OR HIT A BUMP. FOR THAT MATTER, EVERY TIME I MOVED MY BODY, THE SHOULDER STRAP PRESSED AGAINST MY LOWER NECK. WHEN I PUT THIS NECK STRAP BEHIND MY BACK, THE PAIN SUBSIDED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. NOW I HAVE TO HAVE THE STRAP BEHIND MY BACK EVEN IN THE CITY, OTHERWISE THE PAIN IN MY NECK IS THERE ALL THE TIME. SO, FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS, ALL MY NECK PAIN HAS BEEN CAUSED FROM THE DEFECTIVE SEAT BELT, AND I WANT IT FIXED/REPLACED. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE WITH THE SHOULDER BELT BEHIND MY BACK. THERE NEEDS TO BE A DEVICE THAT MOVES THE SHOULDER STRAP FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BODY OVER TOWARD THE MIDDLE OF MY BODY SO THAT THE SHOULDER STRAP LAYS ACROSS MY SHOULDER AND DOESN'T WRAP AROUND MY LOWER NECK.
I HAVE 3 ACTIVE RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE AND TOYOTA SEEMS UNABLE TO SUPPLY THE PARTS TO FIX IT. THE RECALLS ARE FOR "DRIVE AND FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES", "REAR LEAF SPRING" AND "CORROSION-RESISTANT COMPOUND APPLICATION TO THE VEHICLE FRAME". FOR THE SEAT BELT PROBLEM, I HAVE MADE APPOINTMENTS WITH 2 DIFFERENT TOYOTA DEALERS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR, HAVE DRIVEN 60 MILES EACH WAY TO HAVE IT DONE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD WHEN I GOT THERE THAT THE PARTS WERE ON "NATIONAL BACKORDER". I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD BY BOTH DEALERS AS WELL AS A TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE THAT THERE ARE NO REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE "LEAF SPRING" PROBLEM AND THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHEN WHERE WOULD BE ANY. AS FOR THE LAST ISSUE, TOYOTA HAS PUT A DEADLINE OF 3/31/16 ON THE RECALL AND BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE WITH TOYOTA DEALERS, I DOUBT THAT I CAN FIND ONE IN MY STATE THAT WILL DO THE WORK BEFORE THE DEADLINE. I HAVE ALREADY EXPRESSED MY FRUSTRATION WITH BOTH THE LAST DEALER AND WITH THE TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE. REGARDS, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

We had four Goodyear Assurance 215/70R/15 tires installed on our 2008 Tacoma pick-up by Sam's Club in 2019. While driving at highway speed (~55 mph), the driver's rear tire had a blowout of the outside sidewall. There were no objects or potholes run over. After removing the tire and inspecting the tread, there are no signs of any foreign objects in the tread. The tire pressure checks for all the tires were completed within the previous month, and they were balanced and rotated by Sam's Club within the previous three months. Fortunately, this did not occur on a front tire since we were on a heavily traveled two-lane road and we could have lost control with a catastrophic failure like this one. There were approximately 15k miles of use on all the tires.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE FR710 TIRES, SIZE: P205/70R15. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE EXHIBITED BUBBLES ON THE SIDEWALL.
