2009 Toyota Tacoma Suspension Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the suspension system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Suspension reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I have a 2009 Toyota Tacoma that has a significant amount of frame rust. I have recently learned that Toyota lost a class action lawsuit on this model of Tacoma because the frames would rot quickly. I was not aware of this recall, nor was I notified and because of that I missed the 12-year windows for Toyota to replace the frame. Toyota's Owner app made no mention of this either. The only recall that I received was an issue with leaf springs which I had corrected when the parts came in. I'd like to know what I can do to have my truck's frame replaced, or something comparable.

ODI #11516361 I bought this 2009 Toyota Tacoma with 20,990 miles on it on 11/22/2019. Then the pandemic hit the USA and the truck sat for many months. Then in April 2023 I brought the truck in for repairs and the mechanic told me the frame was rusted real bad and that the recall was past the deadline. I brought it to Toyota of Watertown Dealership on 4/07/2023 with 33,348 miles on it and they said there was nothing they could do because the truck was over the 12 years of manufacturing recall date. My truck was manufactured on 8/20/2009, so my recall ended on 8/20/2021. I owned the truck for 19 months during the recall and I never received a recall notice from Toyota. If I had known I would have had it inspected before the 12 years were up and Toyota would have been responsible for the rusted out frame. Toyota is negligent and liable for not informing me of the recall. Now I am stuck with a rusted out dangerous vehicle.

Went for an inspection and entire frame is completely rotting out. Could have ben killed. Truck only has 65,000 miles on it because it was previously owned by my 80 year old grandfather. Toyota should have to fix everyone of these issues not just a certain time frame.

The chassis of my truck is rusting through. I took it to the dealership and was told that the recall for the vehicle chassis expired in 2019. I told them I was not aware of the recall. They then told me the recall was extended until 2021. I told them I brought the vehicle in for a recall repair in 2020 and asked that they check for all recalled repairs. They said they couldn't help me and directed me to the manufacturer. I called Toyota and they claimed that I was ineligible for a recall. Every repair shop I've gone to told me that this is a very common defect with Toyota and everyone gets it resolved through recall. Please assist me.

2005-2011 TOYOTA TACOMA REAR LEAF SPRING RECALL - NHTSA RECALL - 14V-604. PURCHASED REPLACEMENT SPRINGS AND PAID DEALERSHIP TO INSTALL IN AUG. 2013 BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND SPRINGS BROKEN. WHEN RECALL ANNOUNCED IN 2016, I REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT FOR PARTS & INSTALLATION FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES. I HAVE SUBMITTED OVER 10 RESPONSES WITH REQUESTED DOCUMENTATION AND TOYOTA MOTOR SALES REFUSES TO REIMBURSE STATING THEY NEED DOCUMENTATION FROM THE DEALERSHIP WHICH HAS BEEN PROVIDED MORE THAN ONCE. I FILED A BBB COMPLAINT AND THE DEALERSHIP'S RESPONSE WAS TO CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER.

NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 14VG-604 I OWN A 2009 TOYOTA TACOMA. CURRENTLY THERE IS A RECALL ON MY TRUCK. NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 14VG-604. I TOOK MY TRUCK INTO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED FOR THE RECALL. TOYOTA STATED THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPAIR THE PARTS FOR THE RECALL BECAUSE THE TRUCK HAS AFTERMARKET PARTS ON IT. THEY STATED THAT IT WOULD COST ME AN ADDITIONAL 160 FOR THE U-BOLTS TO BE REPLACED IN ORDER TO REPAIR THE RECALL. I CALLED AND SPOKE WITH THE NATIONAL DOT AND TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE, TO SEE IF THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO REPAIR AND REPLACE ALL THE PARTS NEEDED AT NO COST TO ME BUT WERE UNABLE TO PREFORM THE REPAIR. I AM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT DUE TO THE FACT OF A SAFETY CONCERN.

INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). SAFETY RECALL [XXX]- REAR LEAF SPRINGS. CUSTOMER: [XXX] TOOK CAR TO TOYOTA RICHARDSON IN RICHARDSON TX FOR BRAKE AND RECALL REPAIR IN JUNE 2016. THEY GLADLY FIXED THE BREAKS FOR $600 BUCKS, BUT HAD TO ORDER PARTS FOR THE RECALL AND CALL ME WHEN READY. LEFT A BAD REVIEW ON THEIR REQUESTED CUSTOMER SURVEY BECAUSE IT FELT LIKE A "BAIT AND SWITCH" . WAS CALLED BY SVC DEPT MANAGER. HE ASSURED ME THAT THEY WOULD ORDER THE PARTS AND CALL ME. I NEVER GOT THE CALL. I CALLED THEM ON MARCH 2, 2017 TO FIND THE STATUS OF PARTS, AND NO PARTS WERE ORDERED. NO GUARANTEE THAT THEY WILL HONOR THE SAFETY RECALL. I HAVE ATTACHED A COPY OF THE 1ST PAGE OF THE INVOICE DOCUMENTING THAT THE TRUCK WAS DELIVERED FOR THE REPAIRS THAT I HAVE MENTIONED ABOVE. *DL

I HAVE BEEN WAITING SINCE 9/24/2014 FOR YOU TO MAKE TOYOTA ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR VEHICLES. IT IS NOW 1/23/2017 AND YOU HAVE NOT DONE A [XXX] THING! WHY DO I EVEN BOTHER WRITING TO YOU WHEN I KNOW IT'LL BE ATLEAST 2 MORE YEARS BEFORE YOU EVER MAKE TOYOTA BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR BAD PARTS, ETC... OR IS THIS THE USUAL BUREAUCRATIC STUFF THAT GOES ON IN DC TO MAKE THE CONSUMER FEEL LIKE SOMETHING IS ACTUALLY BEING DONE, WHEN ALL YOU'RE DOING IS WASTING PAPER BY SENDING US RECALL BS THAT REALLY NEVER MATTERS TO YOU ANYWAY!!!
