Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

SUSPENSION:REAR:AXLE:NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY

Nov 13, 2015
279 units potentially affected
The defect: Trails West Manufacturing of Idaho, Inc. (Trails West) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Santa Fe, Santa Fe II, Classic, Classic II, Sierra, Sierra II, Royale, Sierra Select, RPM BP, and Hot Shot trailers manufactured February 18, 2015, to August 25, 2015, and equipped with 3500lb-capacity torsion model axles. The weld that secures the torsion arm assembly may fail allowing the tire, wheel, hub, and torsion arm to separate from the trailer.
The risk: A separation of the torsion arm can result in a reduction in vehicle stability, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Trails West will notify owners, and dealers will replace any suspect axles, free of charge. The recall began on December 9, 2015. Owners may contact Trails West customer service at 1-208-852-2200.

NEARLY BRAND NEW (THREE MONTH OLD TRAILER) FRONT AXLE BROKE/SNAPPED OFF COMPLETELY ON RIGHT HAND SIDE CAUSING THE ENTIRE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO COMPLETELY COME DETACHED. WHEEL FLEW ACROSS THE HIGHWAY. WAS HAULING A HORSE AT THE TIME WITH 5 PEOPLE IN THE HAULING VEHICLE. THERE IS NOTHING HOLDING THE FRONT AXLE IN PLACE. UPON CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURER HEADQUARTERS, A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE NAMED "KURT" INSTRUCTED ME TO HAUL THE VEHICLE MYSELF TO HAVE WHAT HE CALLED A "CLEARLY DEFECTIVE AXLE/PART" 25 MILES NORTH TO BE REPAIRED. I ASKED IF IT WAS SAFE TO HAUL, HE RESPONDED "WELL, IT SHOULD BE". I WAS UNCOMFORTABLE HAULING A TRAILER ON A HIGHWAY WITH THE KNOWLEDGE IT WAS MISSING A WHEEL, LISTING TO ONE SIDE, WITH AN EXPOSED, UNSECURED AXLE. AFTER MULTIPLE CALLS TO THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER, I WAS TOLD THAT SOMEONE WILL PICK IT UP AND HAUL IT TO BE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. I UNDERSTAND THAT DEFECTS OCCUR, HOWEVER, THAT THE MANUFACTURER TOLD ME TO HAUL IT, WITH A BROKEN AXLE AND MISSING WHEEL, IS ALARMING.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
